St Albans Bike Bus

St Albans Bike Bus Making cycling to school safe, quick and huge amounts of fun.

Our first bike bus started in St Albans in September 2024 and we cycle in a route around New Greens that allows primary school children to cycle safely to Margaret Wix and Garden Fields.

We're incredibly proud to be a part of the and campaigns that have made this change happen. It's a particularly proud moment to see the photos we contributed to so brilliantly illustrating the dangers SUVs pose to our children in the news coverage.

❗Children hit by SUV's are 3 times more likely to die than if they are hit by a smaller car.

❗The drivers of SUVs cannot see children under the age of 9 when they are standing in front of them.

❗The number of SUVs in England's cities has increased from 3% to 30% of cars in the last 2 decades.

If we want our children, and our children's children to have safe streets .... this trend cannot continue. Bravo Cardiff and let's hope authorities everywhere follow suit.

Feeling encouraged, humbled and very grateful 💚

Damian and daughter have been honoured with this year’s Ember Eco Award from the St Albans Sustainability Festival 🌍

The judges said:

“The work you do with the Bike Bus, along with your constant campaigning for cleaner streets, is a real inspiration. The way you’ve involved the community is fantastic — a great project and well deserving of recognition.”

They are genuinely touched — and would like to dedicate it to everyone who’s cycled with the Bike Bus, picked litter on a cold Saturday or Sunday morning, said thank you on the street or cheered us all on online. 🚲🧤

Thank you to every volunteer, child, parent, and supporter who’s helped make our streets safer and cleaner — this is a shared achievement. 💪

The award itself is a beautiful glass piece handmade locally by Heartwood Glass — perfectly fitting for an initiative rooted in community.

🚲👨‍👩‍👧 Friday’s Bike Bus – Why Not Give It a Go? 👩‍👩‍👦🚲

Tomorrow (8:00–8:30) we’ll be cycling together through New Greens to Garden Fields and Margaret Wix schools.

The Bike Bus is a safe, supportive way for children to ride to school – surrounded by other families and experienced adults. It’s not about speed, it’s about confidence, fun and community. 🌟

If you’ve been wondering whether your child could cycle to school, tomorrow’s the perfect chance to try. You don’t need to commit every week – just come along and see how positive it feels. 💚

On our page we will have a tracker from 7.45am so you can see where we are and join us on route or just turn up at the little Playground in toulmin dr opposite Maple Ave for 8am.

🚲 One year of the St Albans Bike Bus 🚲
Where are our leaders?

Every Friday at 8 am we’ve been out there. We’ve posted on Facebook, shared to local groups, reached out to schools, parents and cycling communities. We’ve shown up.

This morning?
• Juliet Voisey, Green Party councillor – riding every single week for a year, even without a child on board. She’s a leader!
• Bill Howard – cycling from London Colney at 7.30 am just to be part of it. What a forward thinking citizen.
• Me – a dad who started this a year ago.
• And my daughter.

That’s it.

So here’s the truth: if councillors, leaders and people of influence in St Albans and Hertfordshire really want families to cycle to school, you need to cycle too. Put your pedals where your mouth is. Join us. Show parents it’s possible.

Because right now, for most families, it feels too dangerous.
And unless those in power are willing to ride with us, nothing will change.

👉 The bike bus rolls every Friday. hey St Albans City and District Council Hertfordshire County Council Come and ride. Show you care.

🌱🚲 New Greens & Batchwood Families – We Need You! 🚲🌱

Every Friday at 8am, a small but determined Bike Bus leaves Toulmin Drive playground and cycles safely, together, to Garden Fields and Margaret Wix schools.

Right now, it’s just one child and a couple of adults. But we know it could be so much more. In other parts of the country, Friday bike buses see 50–90 riders every week – whole communities coming together, making the journey to school safe, joyful and stress-free.

✨ Next week is Bikeability week at Garden Fields. There will be hundreds of bikes in the playground for a week. But what happens the week after? Back to just a handful in the bike sheds.

The Bike Bus can change that.
• It’s not about speed – it’s about community.
• You don’t have to ride the full route – we can tell you exactly where we are with our live tracking app, and you can join in as we pass.
• We can adjust the route if it doesn’t suit families.

We would love to see more children, more parents, more bikes. Imagine the energy, the visibility, the fun of arriving at school together! 🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️

If you’ve been thinking about cycling to school but worried about safety, this is the perfect way to try it. With adults front at the side and back, children in the middle, it’s a safe and social way to ride.

👉 Please comment below if you’d like to give it a try. Even one Friday a month would help grow the momentum. Together, we can make cycling to school a normal, joyful part of life in New Greens and Batchwood.

Let’s not lose that Bikeability buzz. Let’s build something lasting. 💪
