🌊 A Busy Day in St Mawes ☀️

What a fantastic day in the harbour for the St Mawes Cup. There’s certainly been plenty going on on the water.

We're heading to St Mawes for our next outing on Sunday for the annual RNLI Lifeboat Service.
This is always a very popular service and a lovely evening.

⚠️ SWIMMING SAFETY REMINDER ⚠️

A reminder to all swimmers to please use the marked swimming areas.

The inner and outer harbour can be extremely busy, with small boats, tenders and larger commercial vessels moving throughout the harbour.

Please remember that swimmers can be very difficult, and sometimes impossible, for boat operators to see.

Today I received this from Environment Agency indicating that the bathing water is now up to standard. 💦

Dear Jayne Kirkham MP,

I am writing to you with an update on the sewage pollution incident at St Mawes.

South West Water completed repairs to the sewage pipe on the evening of Tuesday 4 August and reinstated the Pumping Station overnight. They stood down their tankers on Wednesday 5 August.

Our officers visited the site and took samples on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and this morning (Thursday), noticing daily reductions in visible sewage signs and odours, which are now absent. Initial results for E.coli show a significant reduction from Monday to Tuesday. The Tuesday results would have met the ‘Excellent’ water quality standard if this were a designated bathing water.

We are sharing these results with the Harbour Master, and will continue to do so as the remaining results come in. The Harbour Master and Cornwall Council have now removed barriers preventing access to the water, but left up signs reminding the public that they swim at their own risk.

This Government has already passed the Water (Special Measures) Act which has started the process of:

- blocking bonuses for executives who pollute our waterways
- bringing criminal charges against persistent law breakers
- enabling automatic and severe penalties for wrongdoing
- and ensuring monitoring of every sewage outlet

Fines cannot be paid from billpayers and self-monitoring will stop.
