Absolute nightmare today.
The SGN roadworks which started in yesterday have caused absolute mayhem on the local roads β especially given the additional emergency closure of Ovenden Road.
Sadly, this is only the first phase of works between Riverhead and Sevenoaks railway station but today I called an urgent meeting with SGN and KCC to discuss the works, how they are being managed and what more they can do to ease traffic problems β including requiring the traffic management of Chipstead Lane to be urgently reviewed to reduce peak hour gridlock.
It was made clear to SGN that it is unacceptable for works to be taking place now that schools had returned, and that they should have waited for the next school holidays.
SGN provided reassurance that the contractor is working extended hours to get the necessary works in this location finished as quickly as possible, with the current phase expected to move beyond the roundabout and up Amherst Hill by around the middle of next week - subject to progress, reinstatement and curing. Traffic conditions at the roundabout should improve once this happens. The team is also reviewing whether non-reinforced concrete can be replaced with a flexible tarmac solution, which could reduce curing times and I have been clear that all additional resources must be used to accelerate service connections wherever possible.
The Ovenden Road emergency closure is a separate issue and has occurred due to a hole in the road. I have been told that a worst-case scenario will mean the road is closed until the 16 October, but I have pressed for the investigation and repair to be completed as soon as possible given the knock-on effects.
I will continue to be in close communication with the team to understand progress and developments and share updates as and when I have them. I will be monitoring the works throughout to ensure every effort is made for them to be completed as quickly as possible
