New Keighley cycling hub launches with refurbished bike sale and community activities

Community cycling charity Capital of Cycling has opened a new WYCA funded cycling hub in the Airedale Centre aimed at helping more people in Keighley get active, travel sustainably and access affordable bikes.

The new space, called KATS (Keighley Active Travel Services), brings together a range of cycling and active travel initiatives in an accessible town centre location. To celebrate the launch, the charity is hosting a second-hand refurbished bike sale on Saturday 14 March from 10am to 3pm, giving Keighley residents the chance to purchase quality refurbished bikes at affordable prices.

The bikes available on the day have been restored by the charity’s staff and volunteers in the hub’s workshop.

The new hub has already welcomed a visit from the Town Mayor of Keighley, Cllr Chris Heard, who stopped by to meet volunteers and staff after being invited by one of the project’s volunteers.

As well as the refurbished bike sale, the KATS space hosts a number of regular activities and services, including:

WYCA funded Free Bike Maintenance Lessons every Tuesday from 1pm to 3.30pm, where people can learn practical skills to maintain and repair their own bikes.

A community bike workshop, where donated bikes are refurbished by staff and volunteers.

The Active Travel Social Prescribing e-bike loan scheme, which provides access to electric bikes through referrals from health and community partners, helping people build confidence, improve wellbeing and travel more independently.

WYCA funded Adult Cycling Lessons from Keighley Leisure Centre.
Capital of Cycling is appealing for volunteers to get involved in the workshop and help repair donated bikes. Volunteers can learn new mechanical skills, gain experience and take part in a friendly social space.

We are also looking for people to help set up a bicycle repair co-operative in Keighley Airedale Centre, which will be a place to come and learn how to repair your bike in a friendly atmosphere.
Roy- volunteer. “I have fun, learn new skills, it keeps me occupied for a few hours and I make a contribution to the local community”

Made possible with support from West Yorkshire Combined Authority, helping local people access affordable bikes and active travel.
