Windship Technology has the solution to reduce commercial shipping emissions from the present level of more than 10% of the global emissions to True Zero emissions.

This week the International Maritime Organization - IMO are meeting with delegates from 175 shipping countries to agree a new timeline for the shipping industry to meet new targets to halve emissions by 2030 and be net zero by 2050.

According to BBC News, last week, the Secretary-General of the IMO, Kitack Lim urged delegates "to make the compromises and find solutions", describing 2023 as "a year of decisive climate action”.

His views were echoed by Faïg Abbasov from campaigners Transport & Environment (T&E): "Waiting until 2050 to decarbonise is a bit like waiting until your house burns before you call the fire brigade... what is needed is political will; IMO needs to either step up or ship out."

As countries prepare for the International Maritime Organization - IMO meetings, which will take place in London this week until 7th July, research published on Monday by the consultancy CE Delft found that CO2 from shipping could be cut by between a third and a half this decade by using already available techniques and embarking on innovative technology such as hydrogen.

There are ways of using oil-powered ships more efficiently, including better maintenance of engines, cutting speeds slightly or optimising speeds to the sea conditions. Ships can be fitted with modern forms of sails or “wind-assist” technologies that take some of the strain from engines when the wind is strong.

If these were used, and another 5-10% of shipping were to begin to use experimental fuels such as hydrogen, biofuels or forms of electrification with solar batteries, then emissions from fuel use could be cut by between 36% and 47% within the next decade, compared with 2008 levels.

This International Women's Day we wanted to shine a light on Hattie Rogers. During her Degree and beyond Hattie has worked with Windship Technology.

Hattie graduated last summer with a first in her Masters following her Degree in Ship Science and Engineering at the University of Southampton, and has recently been awarded Yachting Journalists' Association Yachtsman of the Year.

Hattie said, “It fills me with pride to be a young woman and trail blazing a new pathway in professional sailing for women and youth, as well as being a recently qualified Engineer. It is great
that both industries are now fully embracing women.”

Hattie is fascinated by engineering principles and their applications, particularly in the fields of sustainability and decarbonisation of shipping and optimisation of sailing performance. Combine this with her love of water, her Ship Science Degree proved the ideal choice.

On Windship Technology, Hattie said, “Windship Technology has the solution to eliminate CO2 emissions from commercial shipping. If the shipping industry remains unchanged, it is predicted that it will rise from the current figure of 3% to 10% of global CO2 emissions by 2050 - when I will be 50. There is no doubt that this demonstrates that the Windship Technology project will significantly help to combat climate change for my generation and beyond.”

Spectacular seagrass 🌱

These undersea meadows are home to some amazing wildlife and store huge amounts of carbon.

Seagrass captures carbon at a rate 35 times faster than tropical rainforests, and accounts for 10% of the ocean’s total burial of carbon (despite covering less than 0.2% of the ocean floor), they are one of our most important natural solutions to the climate change crisis.
