A new 90-passenger ferry for Scotland’s west coast has been announced in partnership with Seabound Engineering.

The 18 metre aluminium catamaran is designed for dependable year-round service on Scotland’s west coast routes, where durability and ease of maintenance are key factors.

The contract represents a clear step into the Scottish ferry market.

The vessel will be built by Seabound Engineering in Greencastle, Ireland, with construction scheduled to begin in summer 2026 and delivery expected in 2027.

Rockabill Marine Design has signed a full design contract with Seabound Engineering for a new 90-passenger ferry operating on the west coast of Scotland.

Plenty happening at Rockabill Marine Design as the year gets underway.

We’ve welcomed a new Naval Architect and are growing the team further. The 25m mussel vessel is progressing well toward launch. Our USV work continues to expand. We have strengthened our in-house CFD capability. Our Southampton office is also getting a refresh.

Ruairi shares more on what the year looks like and what is planned next.

The 15m CTV for Irish Commercial Charter Boats is now in the water at Seabound Engineering.
The launch went to plan. The weather helped.

The RMD team was on site for the lightship survey and incline test that was witnessed by both the MSO and the MCA. Every weight shift and every reading confirmed the design and work. This is the point where months of drawings meet real results. The vessel was bang on weight target, well done Seabound Engineering.

Next step is machinery commissioning and sea trials. The focus now is on performance, and handling.
More updates will follow as the vessel moves toward handover.

The 15m CTV at Seabound Engineering is now outside and really starting to look like a boat.

A great moment in any build — seeing the full form for the first time. We’re looking forward to the next steps as final fit-out and testing get underway.

Progress continues on the 25m mussel harvester at Seabound Engineering — and it’s great to see the scale of this vessel really coming together.

From drawings to full-size frames, the structure now gives a true sense of what this boat will deliver once complete. The build is moving smoothly, with more updates to follow as progress continues.

The 15m aluminium CTV at Seabound Engineering is now in its final stages — systems are being fitted, details finished, and launch is getting close.

This stage is always rewarding: when months of design and build come together into a complete vessel, ready to go to work.

We’ve added the latest photos from the yard to the project page on our site, showing just how far the build has come. More to follow soon as launch day approaches.

We’re supporting the Spiralis Energy team with naval architecture and structural design on their innovative tidal platform — Link in the comments ⬇️

The Spiralis system is a smart step forward in tidal power — and it’s been a rewarding technical challenge to help bring it to life.

It might just look like a pile of metal — but this is where it begins.

The first cut aluminium has arrived for the 25m mussel harvester. From here, things move fast — frames, welds, structure. Always exciting to see a design start turning into a real working vessel.

🖥️ We’ve just launched our new website.

It’s built to better showcase our designs, our past work, and the projects we’re currently developing — from aluminium RIBs to fully electric workboats and aquaculture platforms.

We’ll be adding more in the coming weeks, but for now:

On the ground and in the shed.

Ruairí and Jas paid a visit to Amc Boats last week, checking in on one of our upcoming projects currently in the early build stages.

It’s always valuable to get on site — these visits give us the chance to review progress firsthand, align on the finer details, and ensure everything is heading in the right direction.
We’re really pleased with how things are shaping up and grateful to the AMC team for their ongoing collaboration.

More to come soon on this cool project…
