My husband Paul and I would like to thank you, in particular Steve and Jenny for organizing our amazing holiday. All you had booked for us went smoothly. The hotels you picked were great, we were central everywhere we went. We enjoyed lovely food, and great entertainment and the footwear didn’t get worn down in the process. Because the hotels were always in the middle of everything. July was an awesome time to go. As we live in 45-degree heat most of the year round, 21 degrees was a lovely respite. Thanks again and I’m sure we’ll be using you again. Sara

Here's an odd law of physics that airports have somehow managed to override: the moment a voice announces "Now boarding Group 4," every single human within a fifty-metre radius stands up, regardless of what their boarding pass says. Group 1. Group 9. People who are not even flying today. It's less a boarding call and more a starter's pistol.

And so a queue forms. A long, dignified, entirely unnecessary queue, made up mostly of people who will now stand holding a wheelie bag for eleven minutes so they can sit down again forty seconds sooner on the actual plane.

The calmer, more evidence-based approach is to remain seated until your number is genuinely called, watch the stampede with mild anthropological interest, and then walk on board like someone who has read their own ticket. Same seat. Same flight. Considerably less queueing.

The satnav always speaks in the voice of someone who has never once been wrong. Calm, measured, mildly disappointed in you specifically. "In two hundred metres, turn left." You turn left. It was a farm gate. Somewhere, a cow reassesses its afternoon.

Here's the thing nobody warns you about hire cars abroad: the satnav will absolutely walk you into a roundabout you circle four times like you're auditioning for a lap of honour, then say "recalculating" as though you've let it down. It will send you down a single-track lane apparently modelled on a corridor. It will accept no responsibility whatsoever for the three-point turn you're now performing in a stranger's driveway while a dog supervises.

The blue line is a suggestion with excellent posture. Not a legal document. Not a personality. Just advice.

So when it clearly develops opinions: pull over somewhere sensible, breathe, check the actual road signs, and remember that a wrong turn isn't a crisis—it's just extra scenery you didn't pay for.

There is a particular kind of silence that falls over a cruise ship during the muster drill. Several hundred confident adults, all clutching an orange life jacket like it owes them money, nodding solemnly at instructions they are absolutely not retaining.

Everyone has located their assembly point. Or at least a corridor with similar lighting and a comparable number of exits, which feels close enough under the circumstances. Someone always asks a crew member a question that was answered ninety seconds earlier, loudly, into a microphone.

Here is the useful bit hiding inside the joke: actually find your point, not just the vibe of your point. Note the nearest stairs, not just the nearest bar, tempting as that landmark is. You will forget most of this by Tuesday. That's fine. Ships plan for forgetful humans. It's the entire business model.

Attend properly, laugh quietly, then go and misplace Deck 7 for the rest of the week like everyone else.

There is a moment on every cruise when an ordinary, sensible adult approaches the buffet and quietly becomes a structural engineer. Bread roll as foundation. Curry as load-bearing centre. A wall of prawns acting, somewhat optimistically, as reinforcement. Then, right at the top, defying physics and marriage vows alike, a single unsecured profiterole.

Nobody plans this. It happens gradually, tray by tray, decision by ambitious decision, until the plate resembles less a meal and more a geological formation.

The solo traveller has an advantage here. No one raising an eyebrow. No one whispering "you're not having pudding with your curry" across the table. Just you, gravity, and the quiet dignity of carrying it back to your seat without a landslide.

Take pride in the wobble. Respect the load limits. And if the profiterole falls, that's not failure — that's the buffet exercising its own judgement.

Every hotel room contains a small wall panel that has clearly been designed by someone who once found lighting "too straightforward" and decided to fix that.

There are usually six switches. One controls the bedside lamp. One controls the main light. One appears to control nothing at all, which is somehow the most unsettling option. One plunges the entire room into total darkness, including the bathroom, at 11 pm, while you're mid-tooth-brush. And one, by all available evidence, controls a lamp in a completely different room, possibly a different postcode.

You will flick each switch at least twice, as though repetition might make the system explain itself. It won't. It has no explanations. It has never had explanations.

The only reliable strategy is to test the whole panel the moment you arrive, while it's still light outside and you still have the emotional reserves for a small defeat. Do it before dark. Do it before you're tired. Do it before you're standing in unearned blackness, negotiating with a switch that owes you nothing.

Nobody warns you that buying a train ticket is basically an act of faith. Advance, Off-Peak, Super Off-Peak, Anytime — four names that sound like they should mean something, delivered by a machine that has clearly seen things it can't discuss.

Anytime sounds reassuring until you learn it mostly means "any time, provided you accept the consequences." Off-Peak sounds calm until you discover your particular train has quietly excused itself from the category. Super Off-Peak exists purely to make Off-Peak feel inadequate. Advance is the cheapest, right up until you miss it by four minutes and it becomes a moral lesson.

The machine isn't being difficult. It's reciting scripture nobody printed out for the congregation. So here's the decoder: if in doubt, ask a human, screenshot the price before it changes its mind, and never argue with the machine in front of a queue. Nobody wins that debate, and the queue remembers.

There is a very specific kind of silence that happens outside an unfamiliar building at 11 pm, holding a phone at 40% battery, retyping a four-digit code like it's the launch sequence for something important. First attempt: hopeful. Second attempt: firmer, as if the door simply misheard you. Third attempt: you start negotiating with the keypad directly, using words like "come on" and "seriously," as though it can be reasoned with.

Somewhere behind that door is a bed. Somewhere in your messages, several scrolls ago, is the code you definitely saved. Probably. In the group chat. Or the confirmation email you can no longer load because the WiFi lives inside the building you cannot get into.

The golden rule nobody puts in the glossy listing photos: screenshot the door code and the host's number the moment you get them, while you still have signal and a functioning brain. Do it at check-in, not at 11 pm on a dark step, treating a keypad like a hostage negotiator.

Travel smart. Laugh often. Panic responsibly. And keep that screenshot.

We're starting a newsletter, and no, it will not help you find Platform 11. Nothing will. That platform exists purely to build character.

What it will do is send you occasional field reports from the frontline of solo travel admin: hotel key cards behaving like they've been personally wronged, satnavs developing worrying levels of confidence, cruise buffets tested for structural integrity, and the odd confession from a road trip that briefly went the wrong way down the wrong country.

There'll be practical tips too, smuggled in between the mishaps, plus updates on new books as they escape into the world.

No inspiration. No linen trousers. Just useful things to know before you're standing under a departure board having a quiet, private crisis.

Sign up if you'd rather laugh before your next trip than panic during it. https://bookscentral.co.uk/first-class-fool

There is a small metal tribunal at every check-in desk, and it does not care about your feelings.

You know the one. Unassuming, faintly hostile, silently reviewing every decision you made at 11 pm the night before, while reasoning that "it'll probably be fine" counts as a packing strategy. It does not negotiate. It does not accept context. It simply reports a number, watches your face fall, and lets a stranger in a hi-vis vest deliver the verdict.

The truth is the scale isn't the enemy. It's just the messenger for a decision you already made when you packed "just in case" shoes for a four-day trip.

The fix is embarrassingly simple: weigh the case at home first, on a real bathroom scale, before it becomes a public event. Remove one hopeful jumper. Reweigh. Repeat until you and the case have reached a quiet, private understanding.

Nobody needs an audience for that particular negotiation.
