Walking around the marina this afternoon, we spotted this rather relaxed visitor making themselves at home on the cleaning bay pontoon!

Supporting the future of the River Great Ouse

Yesterday we were pleased to welcome our local MP, Ben Obese-Jecty MP, to Jones Boatyard for a meeting with Nigel Morris and Mike Starnes from the Great Ouse Boating Association (GOBA).

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss some of the important challenges facing the River Great Ouse, including the condition of the St Ives sluice/staunch, the responsibilities of the Environment Agency and the wider issue of funding for the maintenance of our waterways.

During the meeting, they took the opportunity to visit the St Ives sluice by boat to see some of the issues first-hand.

Our thanks to our MP Ben Obese-Jecty for giving his time and consideration to these important local issues, and to Nigel, Mike and everyone at GOBA for continuing to represent the interests of those who use and care about the Great Ouse.

A special thanks also to Rob from the boatyard for acting as skipper and helping with the visit and photographs.

On Friday evening we said goodbye to Carol, our mum and wife to Mick, who passed away peacefully at home.

Carol was diagnosed with a brain tumour in January and given less than three months. We are incredibly grateful for the precious extra time we had together, for the quiet moments, the chance for her to reconnect with lifelong friends and for her to plan everything exactly as she wanted. Mick, Sam, Ben and Becky were fortunate to be by her side when she passed.

Carol was at the heart of the marina. She took great pride in the planting the beautiful old roses around the marina and in helping to create the picturesque haven that so many of our customers know and love today. She also loved nothing more than stopping for a chat, offering a warm welcome and making everyone who visited feel at home and much more behind the scenes.

Her kindness, dedication and unwavering support have left a lasting mark on the marina and on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. She will be deeply missed by our family, the staff and the many customers and friends whose lives she touched over the years.

Thank you to everyone who has shown us such kindness, support and understanding during this difficult time. Your messages and thoughtful words have brought us great comfort.

We were delighted to wave off the GOBA 'Navigating for Change' Campaign Cruise as it set off upstream in support of the Fund Britain's Waterways campaign.

Over the course of the journey, the flotilla will be raising awareness, flying the flag for Britain's waterways, and meeting local MPs and dignitaries as it makes its way towards the Bedford River Festival.

During this time:
• Shore power will be unavailable.
• Wi-Fi will be unavailable.
• The chandlery will be closed.
• Our telephone system will also be out of service, so we won't be able to take calls until power is restored.

After months of dedicated work from our team, we’re delighted to reveal the stunning transformation of “Peanuts” – a truly unique Sheerline 850, and the only model of its kind ever built by Sheerline Motor Cruisers in 2004.

Our aim was simple: to restore this beautiful boat to her former glory. Every detail has been carefully considered, from a full exterior cut-back and machine polish, to re-lacquered interior woodwork, extensive refurbishment of the teak cockpit, bathing platform and side decks, and the removal and resealing of deck fittings. Alongside countless smaller refinements, the result is a boat that looks and feels as close to new as possible.

With an impressive specification including an onboard generator and fully electric galley, “Peanuts” is now ready to return to the water and begin her next chapter.
This project has been a significant achievement for the Jones Boatyard team, and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome.

To her new owners, who will be mooring on a Premium Berth here at the marina, we wish you many wonderful adventures and unforgettable moments aboard “Peanuts".

Our most majestic residents at the boatyard are undoubtedly the Great Crested Grebes, but their chicks are every bit as remarkable. If you haven't yet had the good fortune of seeing them up close, here are some wonderful photographs Rob took last week that beautifully highlight three fascinating features of these extraordinary youngsters.

1. Nature's perfect camouflage
Great Crested Grebe chicks are instantly recognisable by their striking black-and-white striped heads and necks. Often likened to a humbug sweet, these bold markings actually serve an important purpose. Known as disruptive coloration, the alternating stripes help break up the chick's outline, allowing it to blend into the reeds and making it much harder for predators to spot.

2. A built-in "hungry beacon"
Perhaps even more remarkable is the bare, heart-shaped patch on the crown of the chick's head. When hungry, excited or distressed, this patch flushes a vivid crimson red, acting as an unmistakable visual signal to its parents that it's time for attention—or a meal!

3. Hitching a ride
Very young chicks spend much of their time riding safely on their parents' backs. Tucked beneath the adult's raised wings, they are kept warm, dry and hidden from predators while their parents continue to swim and dive. It's one of the most charming sights you'll see on the water.

As we celebrate an incredible 80 years of Jones Boatyard, we're excited to unveil a fresh new look for our business ⚓︎

While our traditional flag logo has proudly represented us for decades, we felt this milestone was the perfect opportunity to modernise our brand and reflect the exciting future ahead.

Our new identity comes at a time of significant investment across the marina, with upgraded infrastructure, enhanced facilities, and ongoing improvements designed to provide an even better experience for our customers and visitors.

For eight decades, we've been proud to serve the boating community, and while our look may be changing, our commitment to quality, service, and the values that have defined Jones Boatyard since 1946 remain exactly the same.
