Have you ever run for a train? Used the escalator while carrying lots of luggage? Jumped on a train while the doors are closing?

If so, this could be for you. We’ve launched a first-ever train safety film. Watch actress and comedian Diane Morgan, as she realises running for a train, obstructing the doors as they are closing and attempting escalators with lots of luggage are all bad ideas.

With two people every day injured at train stations due to preventable behaviour, this new safety video shows what you should be doing when travelling on the network.

Be Safe. Feel Safe. Travel Safe.

Abandoned station bikes transform lives for adults with learning difficulties 💜🚲

Bikes abandoned at railway stations across the Great Northern network are being used to transform the lives of people with learning difficulties.

Dozens of bikes, left at 81 stations across Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Norfolk, were delivered to TAG Bikes in Huntingdon on Wednesday where a team of adults with learning difficulties will service and repair the bikes before selling them back to the community at an affordable price.

All the money earned is reinvested in the project, run by Cambridgeshire County Council as part of its Supporting into Work programme.

More people than ever are choosing sustainable modes of transport, like cycling, to reach our stations and we’ve been improving and adding new facilities to meet this demand.

Railway stations are a key part of local life. The work we support in partnership with the communities we serve, helps build sustainable and prosperous places for us all.

EXPLAINED: How the benefits of ETCS can be exploited across the railway 🚆

Did you catch ETCS being mentioned on BBC Tech Now? 👀

It featured the Northern City Line (Britain’s first urban commuter railway to be fully controlled by ETCS) and the benefits ETCS is bringing – which presenter Paul Carter eloquently described as ‘the brain’ of the railway.

Some of our ECDP colleagues joined the show, including Simon Cowley, our Testing Training Manager from inside the driver’s cab, Matt Rose, Signaller Manager Trainer at Network Rail and Joe Marshall, Signaller at York ROC at Network Rail. Sarah-Jane Crawford, our Industry Partnership Director also talked about how the benefits of ETCS can be exploited across the railway.

Today we mark 12 years of partnership with Stevenage Football Club, who have formally adopted Stevenage station. It means their academy players will support community projects at the station, and we’ll continue to provide them with travel and education opportunities.

You’ll notice a plaque, unveiled by Kevin Bonavia, next time you pass through the station en route to the footie, or one of the many community projects our teams and the club work together on.

Best of all, The Boro celebrated a 2-1 win at The Lamex today, which we had the pleasure of sponsoring. Congratulations to our Player of the Match, Matt Phillips too.

Making a difference 💜🐝

We are delighted to announce that Forty ‘Homes for Nature’ have been created at Great Northern railway stations across the southeast to increase biodiversity and protect the one in six species now under threat of extinction in the UK.

The stations include Royston and Watton-at-Stone.

Currently 172 habitats have been created across the stations involved, with the aim to create 200 in celebration of the bicentenary of modern railway, which began in 2025.

Through our Homes for Nature initiative, we're helping to spark a vibrant revival of wildlife, nurturing the ecosystems that sustain us all.

As part of the project, two types of bird boxes, bee hotels and hibernacula - a shelter for small animals bugs - have been installed at each station involved.

Thanks to the work of Bee Friendly Trust and, separately, various station and community partners, there are now Homes for Nature at 38 stations.

We are committed to shaping a railway that doesn’t just pass through the landscape but actively restores and supports it, creating spaces where nature can flourish once again. Through our Homes for Nature initiative, we’re helping to spark a vibrant revival of wildlife, nurturing the ecosystems that sustain us all.

Positive progress made at Hertford North’s Access for All scheme 🙌💜

Progress continues at pace on accessibility upgrades at Hertford North, helping to make the station more inclusive and welcoming.

The project involves installing a new lift to platform 1, providing all passengers – particularly those with limited mobility, heavy luggage or pushchairs – with a step-free, more accessible route to the platform.

The project recently reached a new milestone with the new lift shaft superstructure installed and lift shaft cladding completed.

Carl Martin, accessibility lead for Great Northern, which operates Hertford North station, said: “It’s extremely encouraging to see progress being made.

Our community at Hertford North deserves full access to the station, which is why we were so pleased when the government confirmed funding for this scheme.”

“The installation of the lift shaft superstructure marks a key step towards making Hertford North more accessible for all our passengers. We continue to work closely with industry partners to deliver these improvements as quickly as possible and we’re grateful to residents for their patience and support while the upgrades are being carried out.”
