Forklift accidents hospitalise an estimated 1,300 workers each year in the UK, with around 27 fatalities.

That’s why workplace transport safety matters, and why works tirelessly to maintain high standards of operator and instructor training.

But training is just one part of it. Operators must also follow site rules and put their training into practice.

A recent case in Cheshire is a tragic reminder of what can happen when basic safety procedures are ignored.

A self-employed telehandler driver was sentenced after reversing over a colleague, fatally injuring him. An HSE investigation found that an unobstructed turning circle was available, but the operator chose to reverse without a banksman. He had also been using his mobile phone while operating the telehandler.

Even experienced operators can put themselves and others at serious risk when basic safety procedures are ignored.
