Anyone for an early start on a Sunday? 🙋🏽‍

This time we’re at the Altrincham 10K. 🏃‍♂️

Supporting our client with another brand activation for Arla Protein.

We collected the protein pouches, delivered them into the event, and left two vans on site so the team can replenish stock for the runners throughout the morning, all held at +3°C. 👌🏽

Staying chilled from start to finish. 😎

It’s a side of LDJ we’re doing more and more of. Not just getting temperature-controlled products from A to B, but supporting agencies and brands on site, taking the transport and logistics off their hands so their team can concentrate on actually running the activation.

Great to see it all set up and ready to go this morning.

I kept comparing the cost of a driver against the revenue on that van. Wage, employer costs, holiday pay, all of it measured against what the van brought in. Every time, it came out looking like a luxury I hadn’t earned yet.

That was the wrong comparison.

What I should have been measuring it against was what I could do with the two days a week the driving was eating.

The cost of hiring a driver is easy to calculate. The cost of you being the driver is invisible, which is exactly why it goes on for years.

I’ve started writing up what actually happens in the business every fortnight. The real version, including the bits that didn’t work.

Borrowing money isn’t necessarily the problem. Borrowing it for the wrong things is.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned since starting LDJ is that debt can actually be a very useful tool in business.

If I borrow money to buy a refrigerated van, I’m paying interest on that money.

But that van can go out to work every day and generate considerably more than the cost of the finance.

It pays down its own debt.

It produces revenue, and profit that can be reinvested back into the business.

The question isn’t simply:

“How much interest am I paying?”

It’s:

“What return am I getting on the money I’ve borrowed?”

If borrowing costs me interest, but deploying that capital into the business generates a substantially higher return, the interest is simply a cost of accessing capital.

And with inflation constantly reducing the purchasing power of cash, there can be an additional advantage to owning productive assets while repaying debt in tomorrow’s pounds.

Compare that with something I just want.

Let’s say I fancy changing my personal car. I’m far less interested in owning it outright.

It doesn’t generate any revenue and it’s likely depreciating every year.

I’d rather lease it, know my cost and keep my capital available for opportunities that can actually produce a return.

That distinction has changed the way I think about money.

Good debt buys something that can make you money.

Bad debt buys something that costs you money.

Debt should not be feared, it’s a tool. And when used properly, it can accelerate growth.

If I’m paying interest, I want the money I borrowed working harder than the interest I’m paying.
