Our very own Peter Scott went back to his former school in Thornaby to help kick-start a pupil-led initiative to create a garden where they can grow fruit and veg.
We donated several tonnes of recycled compost for the raised beds at St Patrick’s Catholic College together with stone chippings to create pathways.
Victoria Gunn, associate assistant leader, said: “It gives our pupils the chance to learn about lifecycles, growing food and caring for the environment, which links closely to our Catholic Social Teaching themes around stewardship and respect for the world around us.
“It will also create a calm space where pupils can work together and take pride in building something for the school community.”
Jacob, a Year 7 pupil, added: “I’m really looking forward to growing raspberries because they look really good and taste nice as well!”
Peter Scott said that supporting the school was especially meaningful because of his family’s connection to St Patrick’s.
“I came here, my father came here, my brother and my cousins all came through St Patrick’s, and as soon as I heard about the project, I wanted to help. It’s great that the pupils will learn not only about growing things, but also about sustainability and how recycled materials can be reused in a really positive way.”
