🦍 Bwindi Lodge, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda

Set on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in south-west Uganda, Bwindi Lodge has an exceptional setting, with views across a steep valley to the forest canopy beyond. The surrounding forest is one of the most biodiverse in Africa, and gorilla sightings are sometimes even possible from the lodge itself as they occasionally venture into the grounds.

Bwindi covers around 32,000 hectares of steep ridges and valleys and is home to endangered mountain gorillas, 11 other primate species and more than 350 species of birds, including several Albertine Rift endemics.

Gorilla trekking is the main attraction, with 17 habituated groups currently available to visit across different areas of the forest. Treks can last up to six hours, often across steep and challenging terrain, but the chance to track a mountain gorilla family through their natural habitat is what makes Bwindi such a special place to visit.

There is plenty to do beyond gorilla trekking, too. From the lodge, guests can enjoy birding and river walks, visit the local village and community tea plantation, or visit the Gorilla Research Clinic in nearby Buhoma. After a day in the forest, return to one of the lodge’s 10 spacious stone and thatched bandas, each with a private verandah, or unwind at the Humula Forest Spa.

The lodge also supports conservation and community projects through the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust. The nearby Bwindi Bar provides practical hospitality training for young people from the Buhoma area, giving trainees experience in food and service before moving on to internships at local lodges. It’s a great place to stop for a coffee, locally inspired food or the famous Ugandan ‘Rolex’ wrap - and your visit helps support the programme.

Your first safari together is always going to be special, but when it’s also your honeymoon, making sure everything is perfect is a non-negotiable!

When Kit and Amy came to us, they knew what they wanted from their adventure: “We may never do this again, so we want to see as many animals, as many different kinds, without being rushed.”

Add in a love of photography, some private drives and a little luxury - Kelly set about creating a trip around exactly that.

Mashatu Game Reserve sits in the remote Tuli Block of south-eastern Botswana. Covering around 90,000 acres, it’s a varied wilderness of riverine forest, open plains, savannah woodland, rocky outcrops and some impressive baobab trees. This combination of habitats creates excellent conditions for a wide variety of wildlife and gives Mashatu a distinctive character within Botswana’s safari landscape.

Often referred to as the ‘land of the giants’, Mashatu is particularly well known for its elephants, with around 600 resident in the reserve. Lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, kudu, eland and plenty of smaller species are also regularly seen, while the birdlife is excellent, with more than 360 species recorded.

The Tuli region has a long history, with archaeological sites and evidence of settlements dating back centuries, but today it is best known for its wildlife and relatively remote wilderness setting.

Our clients John and Sophia recently visited Mashatu and stayed at Mashatu Tent Camp, capturing these fantastic images during his time there. The camp offers a comfortable but authentic tented experience, with the emphasis firmly on access to the reserve and its excellent game viewing - it is one of seven different properties on the reserve.

Mashatu is also a popular choice for photographers, with photographic vehicles, dedicated hides and specialist guiding available.
