🚀 My Journey: From Apprentice to Signalling Designer

🎯 Taking the Leap
At 17, I had no clue what I wanted to do. I studied coding, science, and maths, but nothing truly challenged me. Then, almost by accident, I found railway signalling design. I took a chance, thinking, if I don’t like it, I can leave. Four years later, I’m still here—no regrets.

🔥 Challenges & Growth
Starting as an apprentice in 2021 was a massive learning curve. The hardest part? Growing up. This was my first full-time job, and I had to learn fast—be accountable, ask questions, and prove myself. Lesson learned: no one knows everything on day one!

🤝 The People Who Made a Difference
The best part? The people. I’ve made lifelong friends and had an incredible mentor, Pickin from 🙌. His guidance shaped my journey, and I’ll always be grateful.

🏆 From Apprentice to Designer
Today, I hold my signalling design licence, take on more responsibility, and my input is valued. The best feeling? When someone asks a question—and I know the answer. That’s when you realise your job has become a skill.

💡 Advice for Future Apprentices
Thinking about an apprenticeship? Just do it. You’ll never know unless you try. This industry has opened doors I didn’t even know existed, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

🚦 Introducing The 57% Club – nope it's not Heinz 🤣
At DigiSig Rail Group Ltd, we don’t just invest in signalling design—we invest in people. Over the past few years, we’ve committed heavily to training the next generation of young signalling design engineers, and today, we’re proud to say that 57% of our entire team started out as an Apprentice, or like Owen Naughton is coming to the end of his apprenticeship. Indeed, our very own Russell Simpson began his engineering journey as an apprentice toolmaker before transferring over to the rail industry.

That’s right—more than half of our engineers began their journey as apprentices, learning from the ground up. From their first day into their apprenticeship program, to becoming fully qualified professionals, they have each shaped the future of railway signalling. What's more their stories are a testament to what’s possible with the right training, support, and determination.

💡 Why does this matter?
Because apprenticeships aren’t just about learning a trade—they’re about building careers, developing leaders, and ensuring that the UK rail industry has the talented young engineers that it needs to thrive. Our apprentices haven’t just joined the workforce; they’ve become an integral part of it.

🚀The 57% Apprenticeship Club – ‘is a celebration of our four apprentices who are now IRSE licenced designers, coming to the end of their level 4 apprenticeship & driving our business forward.’ Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing their incredible journeys—where they started, the challenges they overcame, and what these young engineers are achieving today.

👀 Stay tuned as we highlight the stories behind each of our brilliantly talented young engineers, proving to you, that when you invest in apprenticeships, you invest in the future.

2025 Comes in with a BANG! 🥳 🔫 💥
Well, folks, we swapped signalling for happy trigger fingers and taken our festive spirit straight to Clays Arcade (https://lnkd.in/ezAj59Sn.) Think Peaky Blinders, but with less scheming and more competitive shooting... though Connor and Owen might disagree. 😏

The Leaderboard looked like this…

The foreigner 1766 (Our sharpshooting import!)
Ginger Ninja 1514 (Stealthy, but not stealthy enough...)
The Math Wiz 858 (Clearly better with numbers than targets!)
Sharp Eye 682 (The irony...)
Rahul 628 (Brought the energy, just not the score!)
Stink Monste 572 (Left an impression, if not on the leaderboard!)
Nicetry 144 (Honestly, the name says it all)

The Foreigner & Ginger Ninja, were neck and neck all night, closely followed by The Math Wiz who was still crunching the numbers. Battling it out like Birmingham’s very own Tommy, Michael and Arthur Shelby. 🔫🔥 It was tense, it was thrilling, and it turns out their aim is as sharp as their banter. (Rumour has it they’re still debating the winner—stay tuned for the rematch coming soon!)

Meanwhile, Russell and Mick have realised they’re better at signalling design than shooting and are actively looking for a crash course in "How to Not Miss Everything." 🤣

With every shot came a cheer from the team, and maybe a few beers or three! 🍺 We celebrated all that happened in 2024 in proper DigiSig team style. 2025 has now come in with a BANG—and we’re ready to hit it harder than ever. 🚀

Here’s to a year of big wins, bigger laughs, and keeping the signal strong. By order of the Peaky Blinders!
