It's a shame to see the end of the Big Screen Swindon - There were some fantastic individuals involved in programming, planning, operations and events at first, and the screen hosted everything from operas to the Olympics often stretching the limits of what was technically possible as a 'first of it's kind' for the town.
For instance, it had a live satellite link between the screen, and the Royal Opera House in London.
The big screen was installed in 2008, and funded entirely by the BBC - in 2012 it saw thousands of people flock to the town centre to watch the Olympics, however shortly afterwards it was handed back to SBC & InSwindon BID to operate.
Programming & Events would continue with the main focus being the Christmas lights switch on each year. Although due to it's placement in a semi residential area, it was difficult to expand the events calendar.
In 2017, funding was finally pulled from the screen for both operation and maintenance, and the screen fell silent. Options were explored to just use it for one off events, but it was difficult to guarantee it's reliability.
