A little taster of what’s to come! .... so great to have just received this line drawing of Doris’ hull and fab to see her with her future rig!

Sorry we’ve been a little quiet on here... it’s been back to work for us! Pellew has been launched and after some successful sea trials we are back in the yard with lots of new projects. Doris has found herself a cosy corner of the shed so we can work on her all through the winter and she has some pretty interesting new neighbours. This is east coast snack ‘stormy petrel’ making her way in for some work and bit of an overhaul. These old gals are totting up some serious years between them!

So we’ve been doing a bit of digging into Doris’ history and it turns out she has one particularly interesting past custodian.... meet Quintin Riley... intrepid Arctic explorer, Cornishman (coincidently) and referenced as one of Ian Flemings inspirations for James Bond!

Quintin Riley is most famed for his part in Gino Watkins many arctic expeditions to Greenland where they mapped much of the terrain and undertook weather studies that enabled large strides to be made in the course of transatlantic air travel.

Towards the end of the Second World War he was appointed Commanding Officer of 30 RM Commando – the brainchild of Commander Ian Fleming.
This commando and intelligence unit was used to infiltrate enemy positions, intercept enemy transmissions, crack codes and capture key personnel – all exploits that Fleming would later use when writing his famous 007 stories!

Quintin Riley owed and sailed Doris for many years post 2nd world war and she is mention in his biography ‘pole to pole.’

So fascinating finding out about Doris’ past lives and the people that have owned and enjoyed her..... Doris/James Bond’s boat?!?

The pitch pine planking is so beautiful and in such great condition that we’ve decided to just sand and oil the inside of the hull to really show it off! Pretty lovely eh!?

Some pretty noticeable changes on Doris today! She has been faired and had her first coat of primer and is looking 👌!
Clyde is working on reshaping the the transom, Ned starting caulking and Sam took on the fairing of the inside of the hull. All in all a pretty exciting day, she is coming together beautifully!

Oh she’s looking mighty fine!
Work started on the hull this week, the pre-existing pitch pine planking is in great condition but it needed fairing and sanding. she is looking lovely, almost a shame to paint her!

Sam has also removed her external ballast keel that was the wrong size, it probably came from another boat and although it has served her well we think we can come up with a bit more elegant!
