What should a manager consider when hiring agency drivers, and what should their induction include?

These are just two of the many real‑world questions the Logistics UK Member Advice Centre is asked every week. In our next MAC Briefing, the team will unpack these and a wide range of other common compliance challenges.

This interactive session is built around a fictional operator scenario, giving you clear, practical insight into the issues operators face today. You’ll gain expert interpretation, straightforward guidance and the confidence to apply best practice across your own operation.

You’ll come away with:
+ Actionable advice on operator licensing
+ Practical steps for gate checks and safe vehicle loading
+ What to include in driver inductions
+ Guidance on trade plates and more

After the session, you’ll also receive a link to the recording, slides and Q&A so you can revisit the content whenever you need it.

Open to all Logistics UK members, this complimentary briefing is ideal for anyone involved in vehicle operations or maintenance, from new starters to experienced managers looking for a compliance refresh.

Starring in over thirty series of the multi award-winning Channel 4 show The Last Leg, Josh also served as team captain on Sky Max’s Rob Beckett’s Smart TV and co-hosted hit shows Hold The Front Page and Hypothetical. He’s made multiple appearances on the nations favourite TV shows including QI, Live At The Apollo, A League Of Their Own, Have I Got News For You and Taskmaster, as well as performing on The Royal Variety Performance. A familiar voice in UK comedy and entertainment, Josh is firmly within the BBC Radio 2 family as a regular cover host, and as well as presenting Pace Setter for BBC Sounds.

Josh co-hosts the mega-hit podcast Parenting Hell with Rob Beckett, which toured arenas and led to the release of their Sunday Times Bestselling Parenting Hell book. Josh’s chart-topping Archive Of Pop Culture podcast launched this year, taking a deep dive into the weirdest, wildest and most unbelievable stories from the most important thing in all our lives: pop culture. He’s the author of Watching Neighbours Twice a Day…How 90’s TV (Almost) Prepared Me For Life, a childhood memoir which secured him the Sunday Times Bestseller status.

Josh’s stand-up special, Bit Much, was taped as the iconic London Palladium, airing on Sky and is now available to stream on NOW. He’s back on tour with his brand- new show, Not My Cup of Tea, receiving rave reviews. His show will be filmed at Hackney Empire, for release on Sky later this year.

Changes to standardise van legislation come into effect today removing the nonsensical situation that saw standard size electric vans treated as HGVs when it came to MOTs, driver hours requirements and tachograph use.

The change in law follows sustained government engagement by Logistics UK and was described as “a victory for the environment and common sense” by Logistics UK Chief Executive Ben Fletcher when they were confirmed last month.

It is only the extra weight from their batteries that moved electric vans into the same category as HGVs, and regulatory alignment between electric and conventionally-fuelled vans can speed up the adoption of cleaner vehicles by removing additional costs and complexity.

Logistics UK members should contact the Member Advice Centre (https://logistics.org.uk/membership/member-information-services/member-advice-centre) for guidance on how they are affected by change in law, and it is essential that operators ensure vehicles remain compliant with all applicable regulations, not just MOT standards.

From National Highways: Funding applications open for lorry park improvements.

Lorry parking operators are being urged to apply for funding to help improve facilities after a multi-million-pound fund announced an extension for applications today (28 May 2026).

Launched in 2023, extra funding has been made available through the Lorry Park Improvement Scheme to increase capacity, improve security and improve welfare facilities such as toilets, showers and gyms at lorry parking areas.

The new grants are set to cover up to 50 per cent of capital costs - businesses are invited to apply through the National Highways website here: https://nationalhighways.co.uk/our-work/designated-funds/customer-and-communities/

Applications are open to all lorry parking operators, including those who have already benefitted from the scheme to fund further improvements.

Since the Lorry Park Improvement Scheme was established, National Highways has contributed over £15m through it's Designated Funds Program, which has been matched funded by the industry. Combined with support from the Department for Transport, nearly £69m has been unlocked to improve journeys, security and the wellbeing of HGV drivers.

We’re excited to welcome Physiotherapist Liam Swain to our THRIVE expert series - bringing practical, everyday wellness tips to support the logistics sector.

Today’s one‑minute video focuses on safe lifting in hot weather and one simple technique that makes a big difference: breathing OUT as you lift.

Liam explains why heat changes the way our bodies cope with physical work, and why fatigue, dehydration, and tired muscles can quickly lead to strains and niggles.

Here’s Liam’s advice:
"Hot weather changes things when it comes to lifting.

If you’re spending all day loading, unloading, climbing in and out of vans or moving stock around, your body will fatigue quicker, especially if hydration slips.

And tired muscles are often when little niggles and strains start creeping in. Yes, good manual handling matters. But here’s one really simple thing I’d add…

Breathe OUT as you lift.

It’s something powerlifters use all the time. Controlling your breathing helps manage pressure through the abdomen and spine, allowing the body to move and brace more efficiently.

Simple tweak. Big difference.

And whilst we’re talking hot weather… drink more than you think you need.

Stay hydrated. Move well. Lift smart.

Because trust me… I don’t want all of you ending up in my clinic with sore backs!"

Thank you to Johanna Baxter #1 for West of Scotland MP for raising the vital issues of driver welfare and freight crime in the House of Commons today.

Following her recent visit to Logistics UK member The Malcolm Group with our Senior Policy Manager Alexandra Herdman, it is encouraging to see the real experiences of drivers reflected in Parliament. Drivers are essential to keeping the economy moving, yet too many are working without access to safe, secure facilities and facing the growing threat of freight crime.

Logistics UK has long called for better roadside facilities and stronger action to protect drivers and their vehicles. These changes are critical not just for the resilience of the sector, but for the safety, dignity and wellbeing of the people behind the wheel.
