Wigan & District Model Engineering Society don't just do trains!

Here is member Daniel Barlowe's Wilesco twin-cylinder stationary engine, complete with additional lighting, in action.

These Wilesco engines are a great introduction to steam power and the model engineering hobby.

Despite being a midel engineering society, we don't publish material showing any of the processes we use to make components.

In this video, we see one of the wheel sets for the new Wigan & District Model Engineering Society passenger coaches being turned on a lathe at C.J.S Heritage engineering Ltd in Wigan, using a process called turning.

The process involves the wheels being placed in a lathe, which spins the wheel set while a cutting tool is moved across the steel to cut the shape of the wheels.

Wigan & District Model Engineering Society have startedvwork to replace our ageing fleet of passenger coaches. Despite appearances, the coaches are not buiktvto the same design, mainly because they were built and owned by individual members.

Hiwever, the time has come to replace all twelve coaches with new ciaches, builr to a standard design, facilitating maintenance.

In these shots, we see the wheelsets for the first two bogies that will be placed under the new coaches, being machined at C.J.S Heritage engineering Ltd in Wigan.
