Windsor Carriages

Windsor Carriages One-of-a-kind heritage experiences in Windsor – by carriage, by invitation, by design.

Estate & Castle hospitality and event curation for travel agents, concierges, and international visitors. “Utterly unforgettable, the highlight of our trip to Britain.” For over 175 years, Windsor coachmen have passed down their Victorian horse-drawn hackney carriage taxi licenses generation to generation, preserving a unique tradition and rich heritage. With each passing year, we've expanded our

team, adding more carriages and commercial coachmen with their beloved horses, thus preserving and growing this unique tradition and we proudly offer educational visits for local schools and groups.

''Stories are the heart of our experiences. Growing up on carriages, the century-old tales passed down created smiles and offered a unique perspective of this magnificent royal estate. Our joy is creating exceptional experiences, prioritising our cherished horses' welfare and honouring time-honored practices where luxury meets tradition.''

We look forward to meeting you, Rebecca Seear, Custodian and 5th Generation Licensee

A hosted day in Windsor rarely unfolds exactly as expected.

That’s rather the point.

Some moments you couldn’t plan, even if you tried.

Spring, in Windsor.

There is a moment each year when everything begins again. The estate softens, the landscape shifts, and a new season quietly arrives.

This week, we will be sharing our Spring Journal. A note from Windsor, and a small number of experiences we are now preparing for the months ahead.

If you would like to receive it, you are very welcome to.

For those who prefer to see Windsor as we experience it.

Not sure where to begin with Windsor?

That’s where we come in.

We arrange your time here — privately guided, carefully considered, and shaped around you.

No fixed routes. No set itineraries.
Only Windsor, as it should be experienced.

Spring is the season for maintenance.

At this time of year our carriage wheels are inspected and any repairs made by master wheelwright Greg Rowland MBE one of the few remaining craftsmen in Britain still practising the traditional art of wooden wheel making.

Using methods that have changed little for centuries, his team ensures the wheels remain strong, true, and ready for the season ahead.

Quiet craftsmanship like this is what keeps heritage moving.

The eight-year-old horse-mad girl in me will never find this ordinary.

Walking through Windsor on the way to a meeting and suddenly crossing paths with the Royal Mews horses heading out on exercise.

You can hear me asking if it’s alright to film. Always best to check.

Not our carriages of course, just one of those small reminders that Windsor is still a place where horses, grooms and centuries-old traditions quietly go about their day.

The everyday magic of Windsor. It never gets old.

My father’s hands held the reins in Windsor for over fifty years.

Some of my earliest memories are of sitting beside him on the carriage with his horses.

I must have been about nine when he nodded toward an elderly gentleman walking slowly toward the Castle and said…

“Do you see that gentleman?” he whispered.
“He’s a Knight of the Garter.”

Moments like that taught me that Windsor holds its magic quietly.

This year marks ten years of driving without him.
But we speak of him on every drive.
And I miss him.

These are the sorts of stories I share with my guests in Windsor, and lately I feel drawn to start sharing a few more of them here too.

We are grateful for our guests’ kind words and for being part of our story.

Planning Windsor for clients this spring?

Windsor is beautiful in March and April.
It is also operationally complex.

Castle closure days.
Ceremonial timings.
School holidays.
Peak footfall windows.
Private events that alter access.

The best Windsor itineraries feel effortless.
They are not accidental.

They are carefully sequenced around the rhythms of a working royal town.

This carousel brings together the key notes travel planners should be aware of for March and April 2026.

Save for your next UK visit.

Whether you visit Windsor as a family, a couple, or a leadership team, something shifts when you step beyond the Castle gates.

Time outdoors alters tempo.
Conversations lengthen.
Perspective settles.

For centuries, Windsor has been a place where people gathered to reflect, to decide and to celebrate.

We design privately hosted programmes that honour that rhythm — integrating estate time with civic venues, hospitality and thoughtful structure.

This is where change begins.

Windsor’s Hackney carriages were first recorded here more than three centuries ago.

Over the past year, I have spent time in the archives and alongside the local history society documenting the coachmen who carried that tradition through generations.

Daniel Chapman (1863–1940)
Joby Cooper (1872–1958)
George Paget (1914–2002)
Conway and Raymond Ford
John Seear (1939–2016)

The town modernised.
The Hackney stand moved.
By-laws changed.

The carriage did not disappear.
The craft endured.

Passed from coachman to coachman.
Generation to generation.

Carried forward.

This record continues.

Documented artefacts, photographs or records relating to Windsor’s Hackney carriage history are always welcomed.
