A new transport rule is coming into force on 1 July 2026 — and it could affect your business.
If you use light commercial vehicles (2.5–3.5 tonnes) for international transport, they’ll soon need a Smart Tacho 2 installed.

This system automatically records driving hours and border crossings to improve compliance and road safety.

However, not every business will need one. You may be exempt if:
• You’re transporting your own goods (not for hire or reward)
• Driving isn’t your main role
• Your vehicle operates within the UK only

With fitting appointments currently taking 4–6 weeks, it’s a good idea to start planning now to avoid disruption.

🚧 Planned Maintenance – Important Notice for GVMS Users
HMRC will be carrying out scheduled maintenance from:
🕗 8:00pm on 28 March
🕕 to 5:45am on 29 March
During this time, the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) will be unavailable, meaning you won’t be able to:
❌ Add import declarations
❌ Add export declarations
❌ Validate GMRs
The GVMS core system will still be available, but you should complete any declaration‑related tasks before or after the downtime.
