Today we welcomed 19 beautiful boats from the OGA to our Waldringfield moorings as part of their Summer Cruise.

With this, along with hosting a 20 boat rally last month, the OGA and WBTA rally in May, and all the individual visiting yachts that we host, we are really enjoying seeing so many visitors this year!

If you ever want to visit, as an individual boat or as a flotilla, please book through our website or get in touch as between ours and the neighbouring fairway committees' we can almost always find the space.

With 'Thistle' launched, yesterday 'Gemela' came into the workshop to join 'Moneypenny'.

I'm afraid that I don't know much of 'Gemela's origins or history beyond the last 20ish years that she has been in Woodbridge. Any more information is very welcome.

She is with us now for a new mast, some plank replacements, cockpit sole bearer replacement, samson post replacement and pintle and gudgeon replacement. We're all very taken with her and are enjoying starting another project.

‘Susanna Cook never intended to be a shopkeeper. Then the graphic designer for brands such as La Fromagerie and Pump Street Chocolate fell for a Georgian-fronted store in the Suffolk market town of Woodbridge. The building, whose deeds date back to the early 17th century, was originally a merchant’s house. It had traded as a clockmaker, a saddlemaker, a gun shop and a much-loved antiques shop before Cook commandeered it in 2017 for The Merchant’s Table’.

‘In 2023, Cook commissioned local furniture maker Jim Parsons to make the Trestle Table, crafted in Suffolk oak using traditional techniques. The elegantly pared-back piece of furniture is one of her most popular items; it has an almost constant waiting list. So when Parsons had to take a step back from work, Cook came up with a novel solution: she asked local shipwrights if they wanted to collaborate. Matt Lis, who runs the historic Woodbridge Boatyard, didn’t hesitate. “It’s a table, but so much of it is also a boat,” says Lis, pointing out the commonalities in construction. The legs are crafted in a similar way to a mast. The curved “bows” of the trestles are steam-bent, and then secured with a spoke and wedge, like the “treenail” fastenings used on boats. The tabletop’s oak boards are secured with copper nails and roves, just as wooden clinker-built boats are constructed plank by plank. “It’s the same way that the Vikings built their boats,” says Lis. “It hasn’t been refined because it doesn’t need to be refined.”

A very special opportunity arrived at the boatyard yesterday; 'Leila', a William Fife III 6mr from 1912, which was at risk of being cut up but is now in the safe ownership of Woodbridge and Waldringfield Boatyards.

Whilst she is without doubt a restoration project, she is without question a deserving one. With the help of the Fife Archive and we have a full set of drawings for her and would love to see her restored as designed.

For those who do not know the work of William Fife III, he is considered amongst the greats. The quinquennial (5-yearly) is about to start up in Largs and it would be a wonderful thing to see 'Leila' racing alongside her sisters again one day.

Wow! What a weekend.

Over the bank holiday, we hosted the East Coast Gaffers Deben Rally and the Wooden Boatbuilders' Trade Association's 3rd Wooden Boat Gathering with events in Waldringfield and Woodbridge. We had over 30 boats, ranging from 119 year old yachts to clinker dinghies that were built last year, and almost 100 people.

With many boats arriving on Friday, we sailed on Saturday from Waldringfield to Woodbridge and went to the Longshed for WBG talks from fantastic local farmer and historian Patrick, Loïc, custodian of NYALA - Yawl aurique 1933 which was built by our Woodbridge Boatyard in 1933, and Belinda from Women In Boat Building about the Wooden Boat Stage . Between talks, we toured the The Sutton Hoo Ships Company and enjoyed pizza from The Woodyard.

On Sunday and Monday we sailed beautiful boats in beautiful conditions and, when we weren't sailing, we barbequed and were serenaded by the Orwellermen shanty group.

Thank you to all who helped with the organisation and all who attended, we look forward to seeing you (and more) again in 2 years time!
