Steam returns to Wymondham Abbey Station! 💚⛪

We are thrilled to share that steam services are back on the Mid-Norfolk Railway starting this Friday, 21st August!

Following a thorough review of risks associated with recent dry weather, comprehensive safety controls and mitigation measures have been put into place. Norfolk Fire & Rescue Services have reviewed and approved these extra safety protocols, ensuring everything is in place to protect the line and local surroundings.

Safety remains top priority, so conditions will continue to be monitored closely. But for now, we can't wait to welcome the iconic sights, sounds, and atmosphere of traditional steam power back to our station platform!

Today’s wildlife roll‑call at Wymondham Abbey Station was a reminder of just how alive heritage railways are

From tiny Bank Voles darting through the undergrowth to a watchful Buzzard circling overhead, the whole site was buzzing with life.

Birdsong filled the platform — Chiffchaff, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Blackbird, Wren, Blue Tit, Green Woodpecker, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Jackdaw, Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove, Goldcrest, and of course the ever‑cheerful Robin.

Even a Muntjac made a quiet appearance along the boundary. Butterflies brought a splash of summer colour too, with Small Whites and a Ringlet drifting along the trackside, and bees busily using the flowers in the garden.

Heritage railways are more than living history — they’re thriving wildlife corridors. The mix of old hedgerows, slow‑managed grassland, and undisturbed pockets of habitat creates safe spaces for species that struggle elsewhere.

Then it returns to Wymondham for Thursday 21st of May last few spaces remaining before departing to the Severn valley railway for the weekend.

If that's not all did someone say there is a diesel gala on this weekend coming up more details on that.
