🎄At its best, travel is not about destinations alone — it is about the stories that quietly shape them.
Georgia’s New Year traditions reflect this philosophy: layered, human, and deeply connected to moments of cultural encounter.
🎄 One such story belongs to Tbilisi, on the final night of 1918.
On December 31 of that year, the city welcomed the New Year 15 minutes later than planned. The delay was not political, nor accidental. A respected military figure, Eugene Abkhazava, asked the city clockmaster for a brief postponement. He had given his word to welcome the New Year alongside his beloved, yet duty kept him away longer than expected.
🎄 The Christmas tree itself entered Georgian festive culture gradually.
From the second half of the 19th century, European customs began to influence local celebrations. Until then, Georgia’s more organic symbol was the Chichilaki — reserved for Christmas and rooted mainly in western regions.
⚜️ A rare photograph preserved in the British Library offers visual confirmation of this cultural transition.
Taken in Sokhumi in 1900, it shows a decorated Christmas tree in the home of the German settler Küpper family — the earliest documented image of its kind in Georgia.
🎄 The tree was adorned with flags from different countries, a gesture of openness and respect toward international guests — a quiet reflection of Georgia’s long-standing tradition of hospitality.

🔹The Balconies of Tbilisi — An Architectural Phenomenon Turned City Identity
🔹The story of Tbilisi’s balconies began in the early 19th century, when the city stood at the crossroads of Georgian, Eastern, and European traditions.
🔹️ From this fusion of worlds emerged something ineffably beautiful — homes of European composition adorned with the lyrical grace of Georgian wooden balconies.

🔹️These finely carved verandas, suspended like lace across old façades, gave Tbilisi its poetic epithet — “the lace city.”
🔹️European architects working here were mesmerized by the local ornamentation — the delicate geometry, the sunlit filigree — and wove these motifs seamlessly into the city’s evolving skyline.

🔹️But in Tbilisi, a balcony has never been merely an architectural flourish.
It is a living space between worlds — where the murmur of the street meets the quiet of the home, where laughter drifts through lamplight, and linen flutters like memory in the evening air.
It is not a boundary, but a bridge — between architecture and atmosphere, between people and the pulse of the city itself.

🔹️Few recall that in the early 1800s, Russian administrators sought to erase these “Oriental elements,” demanding that balconies be removed.
Yet Tbilisi, as always, followed its own rhythm — free-spirited, unconventional, instinctively elegant.

🔹️Today, the wooden balconies of Old Tbilisi are more than heritage.
They are symbols — of openness, of conversation, of a city that breathes through its people.
They remind us that Tbilisi was never just built — it was lived into being.

📍 Tbilisi by Evening

“As the sun sets behind Tbilisi’s balconies, the city slows its rhythm and glows with timeless charm. Wooden balconies light up like lanterns, streets breathe with centuries of memory, and every corner invites you to pause and feel the magic of Georgia’s capital.” ✨

Not abandoned — just listening.
Some homes don’t shout. They wait.

This is an Oda — a traditional wooden house from Western Georgia.
Raised gently above the ground, shaped by time and quiet endurance, each one carries the muted echo of a specific family — a lineage held in timber and silence.

Their faded tones are not decay, but dignity.
Each step, worn and cracked, holds thousands of unspoken joys and inherited griefs.
Behind every shutter, the ghost of a lullaby; beneath every roof, generations who built, left, and sometimes returned.

These houses are not empty.
They are filled with presence — with the breath of ancestors and the stillness of memory.

You won’t find luxury here.
You’ll find rhythm. Stillness. Time.

🕊️ You don’t pass through places like this — they pass through you.
Each Oda we visit holds a story too shy to speak aloud — but if you stay long enough, it will tell you everything.

✨ Curated with reverence by Georgian Vacations — we inspire great memories.

🌿 Where Spring Arrives Late 🌿

Spring does not rush into southern Georgia.
It waits — like a guest of honor — until the mountains whisper their thaw,
until the rivers, still dreaming in frost, dare to open their veins.

Before the earth awakens, the sky stirs:
long-winged storks draw quiet promises across the azure,
and far below, at the edges of sleeping lakes,
hazel blossoms lift their pale faces to the sunlight —
a sunlight born from the icebound silence of the Caucasus peaks.

In Madatapa’s meadows, the hush is almost sacred.
Partridges murmur in their nests,
the wind carries no sound but memory,
and every stone, every reed, remembers what it means to begin again.

Spring is not young here —
it is wise.
It does not bloom, it returns.

This is southern Georgia —
a land where even the seasons arrive with reverence.

🇬🇪Happy Independence Day,Georgia🇬🇪
Every year on May 26, Georgians celebrate Independence Day, marking the moment in 1918 when Georgia declared its freedom from the Russian Empire. On this occasion, let’s take a look at Georgia’s past and its journey to freedom.

The years of the Russian Empire
It all began with the annexation of Georgia to the Russian Empire in the 19th century. For more than a decade, the Russian Empire ruled Georgia until the Russian Revolution of 1917. The revolution began during the World War I to abolish the monarchy and adopt a socialist system of government.

The first years of independence
After the revolution, in 1918, the Transcaucasian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (Transcaucasian SSR or SFSR) was formed, with Tbilisi as its capital. It was a union of most of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, as well as parts of Russia and Turkey. This state lasted only a month, as Georgia declared its independence on 26 May of that year. This freedom as well was short-lived, as a few years later, in 1921, Georgia was annexed by the Soviet Union.

Independence in the hearts of the people
Georgia was under Soviet control for almost 70 years. During this time, Georgian identity was degraded, but the spirit of independence always lived in the hearts of the people. In the late 1980s, as the Soviet Union began to weaken, nationalist movements in Georgia gained strength. On 9 April 1991, Georgia once again declared its independence, which became official when the Soviet Union collapsed later that year. However, May 26th remained the Independence Day, while April 9th was declared National Unity, Political Agreement and Remembrance Day. Both holidays are national holidays and are celebrated every year.

How do Georgians celebrate Independence Day?
This is a day of celebration for all of Georgia and for Georgians in every corner of the world. The celebrations are very impressive and include parades, concerts, theatre performances, exhibitions, traditional Supra (a Georgian feast) and of course lots of fireworks! At 05:10 PM, the national anthem is played everywhere, as this is the historic hour when the country’s freedom was declared.

I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, 'Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.

🇬🇪 With its mosaic of cultures and delicious cuisine, the Georgian capital of Tbilisi is an increasingly popular holiday destination.

🇬🇧But a lack of direct flights from London - meaning more than 8-hour-long journeys - are an off-putting factor for some Brits.
Catering to the growing appetite for Georgian holidays, British Airways and easyJet have now announced direct flights to the transcontinental country.

Flag carrier BA is launching flights from London Heathrow to Tbilisi from 30 March 2025, with the budget carrier hot on its heels from London Luton as of 1 April.
