The most destructive and common disease of cocoa is the Black pod disease.
The Black pod disease is caused by a fungus (Phytophtora megakaria and phytophtora palmivora) that spreads rapidly on the pods under conditions of insufficient sunshine, humidity and heavy rain.

If left untreated, Black pod disease can destroy all yields and cause a yield loss of up to 1/3 of total cocoa trees.
Control requires timely treatment with fungicides and constant removal of infected pods.
