At times you come across a narrative that is unclear, inconsistent, or lacks a clear direction or purpose.
The approach to tell those stories, interestingly preserves the influence of deliberate distortion or manipulation in order to create a particular impression or to achieve a goal.
This can happen anywhere, in personal life or at work space, when someone tries to shape opinion by presenting a certain version of events or a particular interpretation of the facts or even too pleased to serve the story in a particular sequence irrespective of the context, relevance or consequence, and with no concern about how it is landing to the listener.
Distortion of truth and untruth are cousins. They both have the potential to confusion, add mistrust, divide, and can erode every fabric of the context, relevance and consequence in any conversation.
6 ways to come out of a spinning story:
# Listen actively: Listen carefully to the story and try to understand the point of view. Show them that you are interested in what they have to say.
# Ask questions: Ask open-ended questions to clarify the perspective, to understand the purpose, context and relevance. This can help to address any misunderstandings or misinterpretations.
# Stay calm: It's important to remain calm and composed during the conversation. Avoid reacting emotionally and try to keep the conversation on track, as such conversations could be very frustrating, at times.
# Be direct: You feel unsure about the story being told, be honest and direct with the person. When your heart and mind are clear, you are able to speak simply and directly. And tact could be to tell someone to go to hell in a way, that they really look forward to the trip.
# Offer your perspective: Share your perspective on the situation in a respectful and non-judgemental manner. This can help to broaden the conversation and bring new insights to the table.
# Redirect the conversation: If the spinning story is not productive or is becoming toxic, try to redirect the conversation to a more positive topic. This can help to diffuse tension and bring a more constructive tone to the conversation.
The key to coming out of such situation, tactfully and mindfully, is to remain direct, respectful, honest, and open-minded, with a focus on larger purpose, trying to find common ground and working towards a positive outcome.
