*GPRTU Western Region Launches Road Safety Campaign Ahead of Christmas Festivities*

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in the Western Region has kicked off an extensive road safety awareness campaign ahead of the busy Christmas travel season. The initiative, themed "Safe Travels During Christmas: The Role of GPRTU in Ensuring Passenger Safety," is designed to reduce road accidents during a time when travel across the country typically peaks.

At the official launch at the Takoradi-Cape Coast Terminal, GPRTU officials took the opportunity to educate both drivers and passengers on the importance of safe driving practices. Emphasis was placed on heightened vigilance on the roads, with passengers encouraged to report any instances of reckless driving or misconduct to local authorities or GPRTU offices. The campaign aims to promote a culture of mutual responsibility, urging collaboration between drivers, passengers, and regulatory bodies to ensure a safer travel experience for all.

In an interview with Journalists, GPRTU Western Regional Chairman, Joseph Simmons Cudjoe, highlighted the urgency of the campaign in light of rising road accidents in the Region. "Awareness and training have become essential, especially with the holiday season and elections just around the corner," He said. "Drivers must exercise extra caution to ensure the safety of all road users."

The campaign will extend to all GPRTU district terminals across the Western Region, including Nzema, Wassa, Bogoso-Asanco and Ahanta. Training sessions will target both drivers and passengers to ensure widespread adoption of safety protocols.

Mr. Joseph Simmons Cudjoe also cautioned against politically charged conversations on public transport during the election season, noting that such discussions could distract drivers. "While we are focused on promoting safe driving, we also need to consider the political atmosphere. Passengers often engage in political debates, but these discussions can distract drivers, so we encourage a more measured approach," he advised.

Mr. Victor Kojo Bilson, the Western Region Road Safety Director, voiced strong support for the campaign, commending GPRTU for its proactive approach. "Public education is key to reducing road accidents, and the GPRTU's efforts are critical in addressing the alarming rise in road incidents," Bilson said. He affirmed that the Road Safety Commission will continue to collaborate with transport unions to tackle the issue of road safety head-on.

Mr. Bilson also offered specific advice to drivers, urging them to avoid driving while fatigued—a major contributing factor to road accidents in the Western Region. "Many accidents are caused by tired drivers," he said. "Drivers should never attempt to power through fatigue with stimulants like coffee or energy drinks. If you feel tired, it’s essential to take a break and rest before continuing your journey."
Several drivers at the event expressed gratitude for the ongoing road safety education, noting that it has significantly improved their understanding of safe driving practices. They reported that the training has made them more vigilant behind the wheel and helped foster a safer environment for all road users.
As the Christmas season approaches, the GPRTU's road safety campaign serves as a timely reminder for all road users to prioritize safety. With increased travel expected across the region, the initiative aims to reduce accidents and ensure a safer and more enjoyable festive season for everyone.

SPEECH BY MR. JOSEPH SIMMONS CUDJOE, GPRTU REGIONAL CHAIRMAN AT THE PASSING OUT PARADE OF THE GPRTU UNION GUARDS AT THE REGIONAL SECRETARIAT-TAKORADI ON MONDAY, 4 SEPTEMBER 2023

Regional Executives, Regional Union Guard’s Commander, Respective Committees, Branch Executives, Regional Staff, Police officers, Officers on parade, ladies and gentlemen. Good afternoon to all and thanks for honoring our invitation.

It is an enormous privilege for me to be standing here taking the Salute at your Passing Out Parade and sharing this memorable moment with you.

As stated in the GPRTU constitution I quote “some members of the union may volunteer to be trained as union guards. They shall serve as security officers at the lorry parks and supervise the porters and the shift system of vehicles.

They shall have authority to go on road checks under P.N.D.C.L. Law 304.’’ Thus, today has brought about a new page in the history of the transport sector. All officers on parade, you have completed the long and challenging training successfully. The moment that you have long been waiting for has arrived, and I must say though that you have done yourselves proud, May I congratulate you all on this important occasion. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the instructors, especially, the MTTD commander and his team, the guard’s commander Mr. Musah Grant for their hard work and contributions in nurturing the generation of guards. As union guards, you will soon be assigned to take up various duties in your respective branches.

The integrity, dedication, and professionalism of the GPRTU union guards are pivotal in making the transport sector better than other transport sectors in the Western Region and the country as a whole.

However, crime lurks everywhere, and how distorted and crafty human nature can be is always beyond our comprehension, thus, as the newest generation of union guards, you will face increasingly tough challenges and high expectations from your branch executives and members, and in the crisp of these just uphold your professionalism.
As the Bible says, “Blessed are the pure in heart’’. The meaning of “pure in heart” is to treasure and hold on to the lofty aims and aspirations and the commitment to serve your branch and passengers. Never let your vision get blurred in the face of pressure or monotony of your work, without vision, the efforts and endeavors you make will diminish. Bravery and decisiveness in the face of urgent situations always comes from moral courage in your heart.

Do everything in strict accordance with the constitution fairly and selflessly Do all you can to remove your “tinted glasses”. Respect everyone’s rights, including offenders.
“Pure in heart” is to have a high degree of self-discipline and integrity and not to succumb to the temptation of money or be corrupted.

“Pure in heart” is to be crystal clear in thinking. You will come across a wide variety of cases at your respective branches, including complex attitude of both passengers and drivers, you need to give good judgment, responsiveness and constantly be high vigilance.
At the unUnion Guardraining school, you have already been given excellent professional training in this regard. But it requires a continuous drive for improvement to strengthen such diverse abilities. You must take every opportunity to enrich your knowledge of your branch and enhance your analytical power through continuing education.

I will use this opportunity to advise you to liberate yourselves from stress, As the sayings go, “Step back and you can see a wider horizon”, “My home is where my heart lies and truth is unconquerable”. Despite being tough and courageous, you sometimes need to talk heart-to-heart with your families and friends to cool yourselves off. Family members and friends of the officers on parade here, your support is most important to them.

Ladies and gentlemen on behalf of Regional Management, I will also commend all branches and their executives, various committees, and staffs of the secretariat for their tremendous support and work done towards the construction of our newly built ultramodern office complex, I say Ayekoo, ladies and gentlemen, let me use this opportunity to applause the building committee Chairman, Mr. Solomon Brenim, and Mr. John Buckman Mensah for championing this great cause, the accomplishment of this project was because of your gargantuan commitment. As we move in today we pray the almighty God grant us the serene environment as we work towards the progress of the secretariat, the official opening of our ultramodern office complex will be done in December 2023.

Let us work together courageously for peace and the rule of law of our constitution and the progress of our branch and the Regional Secretariat as a whole. Once again I say congratulations to you all and God bless all executives gathered here.

Thank you.
