We celebrate the workers behind the scenes

May Day, also known as International Labour Day, is celebrated globally on May 1st to honour workers and their contributions to society.

Today, we celebrate the dedication, professionalism, and commitment of air traffic controllers across the world.

Every day, our expertise keeps the skies safe, ensures efficiency, and connects people and nations. Our work is often unseen—but always essential.

Our profession carries immense responsibility. Behind every safe flight stands our vigilance, our skill, and our unwavering focus.

May Day is not only a time of recognition, but also a reminder of the importance of solidarity, cooperation, and continuous efforts to improve our community worldwide. Which IFATCA does with pride.

On this International Women's Day, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate you. In a field where women are often a minority, you stand out not just as the only female air traffic controller in Banjul, but as a true professional who commands the skies with confidence and precision every single day.

Your presence in the tower is an inspiration, showing that this important job has no gender. We are so lucky to have your expertise and calm demeanour guiding the planes through each shift. Wishing you a day filled with pride and joy—you’ve earned it.

Last week, the Gambia Air Traffic Controllers’ Association (GAMATCA) proudly participated in the 36th IFATCA Africa & Middle East Regional Meeting, held in the breathtaking Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

The meeting, themed “Securing the Skies: Strengthening ATM Capacity through Strategic Recruitment, Training, and Retention,” brought together government officials and aviation leaders, including ministers of transport from Zimbabwe and Ghana and the minister of aviation and airspace development from Nigeria, to discuss the future of Air Traffic Management (ATM) in the region.

The event provided valuable insights into strengthening human capacity and advancing ATM systems—insights that will support ongoing improvements in The Gambia’s aviation sector.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) for their invaluable support in sponsoring our delegate, ATCO Omar Jammeh, to represent The Gambia. This partnership continues to strengthen our shared commitment to enhancing aviation safety, capacity development, and professional excellence.
