Why do sailors use red light at night?
Your eyes have two kinds of light-detecting cells. Cones are great for colour and fine detail when it’s bright. Rods are the low-light specialists that help you make out shapes and movement after dark.

Inside those rods is a light-sensitive pigment called rhodopsin. As your eyes adapt to the dark, your rods become better at detecting faint light. A blast from a white head torch can disrupt that adaptation, leaving you less able to see beyond the boat while your eyes readjust.

Enter the dim red chart light. Rods are less sensitive to red light than to many other colours, so a dim red light can help you check a chart without disturbing your night vision as much as bright white light.

The nerdy-but-important detail? Red isn’t a free pass to turn the brightness up. Keep the light low, make sure you can actually read what you need to read, and avoid shining it into the eyes of whoever is on lookout.
