Thirty years ago, in 1996 a very controversial “kill mark” appeared on a HAF 331 Sqn. Mirage 2000 EGM. It was a spoof of the “Ghost Busters” logo, in which the ghost wore a red fez and the inscription read “Mehmetcik Busters”. Mehmetcik is a popular Turkish nickname for Turkish soldiers. Urban myth has it that this aircraft had shot down a Turkish F-16 over the Greek island of Hios, during one of the many dogfights that commonly took place when Turkish aircraft violated Hellenic airspace. The marking on the aircraft was very short lived and was never approved of by the HAF. It has however gained popularity as an unofficial patch, and indeed sparked a renewed controversy on social media, when it was seen worn by an Indian Air Force pilot, taking part in the 2023 "Iniochos" exercise.
