Sprawling boldly across a pedestrian walkway, this quintessential ‘student café’ is immediately recognizable to any Greek. No frills, no carefully curated table settings, no charmingly designed menu to gloss over. You don’t come here for rave reviews on specialty dishes; the light offering of appetizers - mezedes - amounts to a collection of side dishes, because the main course is connection.

Lively chatter charges the atmosphere as patrons fill the tight spaces between tables and assume their place on timeworn iconic tavern chairs. There’s a youthful energy, and not just because the majority are students - a quick look around and you’ll spot more ‘mature’ pockets of friends.

It’s not the plates of tasty morsels, slender bottles of distilled spirits and dark-glassed bottles of beer that servers skillfully navigate to your table that sate your appetite and slake your thirst - it’s the sense of belonging that connection brings.

: where new friendships spark in the untempered vibrancy of young optimism and old friends revel in passioned debates, because, for a Greek, in the same way mezedes are enthusiastically shared, so too are opinions and love for life.

When you’ve done your thousands of steps, clogged your camera roll, and looked long enough on ancient stone, a few hours at a local café well into the night is where it all falls into place. There, in the most Greek of experiences, you’ll remember the best part of travel is not what you saw but how it made you feel.

ONLY if you want a unique story for your travel diary.

🚌 If you’re on the French side, take Bus 1 from Saint-Louis to Square Soustons in Huningue, then wander on foot to the Three Countries Bridge 🦢 This is a lovely walk to the riverside where you can sit a while on wide benches for swan-watching.
🚋 If you’re on the Swiss side in Basel, hop on Tram 8 to Kleinhüningen - and do the same if you’re already in Weil am Rhein in Germany.

If you have a BaselCard, take a discounted 'City and port cruise' to see it all from the water. Check out for more.

And on this particular trip, don't forget your water bottle, and maybe a snack 🤭
There is the bar there, but check for seasonal opening times.

It’s not *where* an Interrail/Eurail pass gets you - it’s all the moments in-between, and many after the trip.

✨ The real value goes beyond cost-comparisons and “doing the maths”.

🚉 Because travelling Europe by train isn’t about logistics - it’s a mindset shift, and an Interrail/Eurail pass *will* get you there.

🙋🏻‍♀️ If you see me on some platform at some station, or just grinning in glee at one end of a carriage, do come and say hi 😊

I went full-on tourist with this (unplanned) Cold Moon chase, but I'll save you the photo dump.

Sunrise and sunset planning needs more effort, but enjoying a celestial event is an easy fit wherever you are.

Thankfully the last full moon of 2025 was still shining bright last night, two days after it peaked, as Storm Byron made it impossible to view on the actual night.

Do you research when and where you can see a full moon when traveling? Surely it's not just me...

The train ride over the river is a treat! It sets the stage for all the wonder you're about to experience in Torun - the town that stole my heart this year 😍

It's a very walkable Old Town but also with plenty of spots to take a rest if need be.

♿ In June, the only way to exit the Torun Miasto railway station was down a set of stairs, through an underground passage, and then up another set of stairs. There was construction going on, so 🤞 there may now (or in the near future) be an elevator. Call ahead to make sure or get a bus from Torun Glowny, to the same tram stop.

✨ Save this for your Torun travel plans, and see my profile for more on the town of Copernicus and gingerbread - or drop a question in the comments.

Colmar is one of those places that doesn’t need grand plans. Off season is a perfect time to wander its canals, explore its delightful Old Town, wander among Renaissance dwellings and Gothic sanctuaries, and linger in quirky museums.

ℹ️ The Tourist Office of Colmar at Place Unterlinden has friendly and helpful staff and offers information on everything about town and even a little beyond, if you’re eager to explore the Alsace Wine Route.

🛌 Stay in La Petite Venise, snack your way through Marché Couvert, and take in the town from its quietest angles to its lively Parc du Champ de Mars with open space, commanding fountain, and statues. (check out my last reel and you’ll see there’s even a water feature you can run through 😉)

🚆 Book easy, frequent, and direct train journeys from Paris with the TGV INOUI and from Basel with the TER. Strasbourg is a mere 30 minutes away, and you can even get there with just one connection from Freiburg im Breisgau.

✨ Save this for an effortless escape – and the kind of trip that lingers longer than you expect.

There’s a softness to this month, it naturally invites reflection … but also some urgency to make everything meaningful.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and hope you’ll join in this small antidote to the December rush – they could inspire a future evening story, or better yet, someone else’s next trip!

Drop your first question – or thought – in the comments and we can get this little ritual on its way. 💙🚆✨🚉🎄

Slow travel isn’t about doing less, it’s about feeling more. It isn’t anti-fast, it’s pro-presence – shifting from checklists and check-ins to conversations and connection, it’s still an adventure.

✨ We’ve all been there and back – home with camera roll full and in need of rest! That’s where choosing trains over planes, markets over malls, and mornings without alarms can make a difference – it’s where we gather meaning and stories instead of stats.

🌿 Slow, responsible travel extends beyond busy tourist hubs to novelty in overnights in small villages, a monastery stay perhaps, exploring offbeat ruins, and heritage trails – even on rails! This is where we give back, supporting local communities and economies, unsung rural treasures, and traditions warmly shared.

🌍 Let’s celebrate slow journeys – by rail, by road, by heart. Here’s to traveling better, for all.

Two centuries after his birth, throughout the city of music and even by his resting place at Wiener Zentralfriedhof, Strauss’s music plays on.

Today’s birthday venues will resound with the Waltz King’s melodies, and certainly the city’s signature tune ‘The Blue Danube’ - at the House of Strauss, State Opera, Musikverein, Haus der Musik, and at Karlsplatz ... with a bonus OCT.opus!

Have you traveled to Vienna just for this special celebration, or have you visited at any other time during this Strauss Festival Year?

I loved my afternoon at Strahov Library. It's easy to reach and perfectly accessible - plus you can take photographs in all corners. Take Tram 22 or 23 to Pohorelec and it's a short slight uphill walk to the entrance. It's open every day from 9am to 5pm.
