Welcome to Crete. Greece’s largest island stretches over 260 kilometers, and no two regions look the same — the White Mountains rise sharply in the west, olive groves and vineyards spread across the central plains, and the east opens into dry, rugged coastline dotted with small bays. A single trip here rarely looks the same twice, depending on which side of the island you explore.

Expect long drives between highlights, villages that still run on their own rhythm, and beaches that range from busy and organized to completely empty. A rental car is essential — public transport is limited outside the main towns, and much of what makes Crete worth visiting sits well beyond the resorts.
