Marathon Airlines Becomes an IATA Member.

Following our recent IOSA Registration, we are proud to announce that Marathon Airlines has officially become a Member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

This achievement marks another important step in our continued growth and strengthens our position within the international aviation community.

Reflecting on what this step means for Marathon Airlines, our CEO, Andreas Kaiafas, shared:

Marathon Airlines Achieves IOSA Registration.

We are proud to announce that Marathon Airlines has successfully completed its initial IATA Operational Safety Audit, conducted in January 2026, and is now officially included in the IOSA Registry.

The IATA Operational Safety Audit is an internationally recognized evaluation program designed to assess an airline’s operational management and control systems. Our IOSA Registration reflects Marathon Airlines’ commitment to maintaining robust operational processes, a strong safety culture, and internationally recognized standards across all areas of our activity.

Commenting on this important milestone, our CEO, Andreas Kaiafas, stated:

Today, we honor another remarkable chapter in aviation coming to a close.

After an extraordinary career spanning 36 years and accumulating more than 20,000 flight hours, Captain Merkourios Spanos has completed his final flight, leaving behind a legacy defined not only by experience, but also by character.

From his early years in aviation and his time with Olympic Airways, to commanding aircraft across the Airbus A300, A320, A321, A340, and Boeing 737 fleets, Captain Spanos built a career that reflects the highest standards of professionalism and dedication to flight operations.

Since joining MARATHON AIRLINES S.A. in August 2022 as a Captain on our Embraer fleet, Merkourios quickly became much more than a highly respected pilot. Known for his calm demeanor, kindness, and unwavering professionalism, he earned the appreciation of colleagues across the organization. His reassuring presence, thoughtful approach, and willingness to support others made him not only an outstanding aviator, but also a valued friend and mentor.

Aviation is built on experience, but it is people like Merkourios who remind us that the greatest impact is often made through humility, respect, and the example we set every day.

On behalf of everyone at Marathon Airlines, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for his contribution, his dedication to safe operations, and the positive influence he has had on those fortunate enough to fly and work alongside him.

Thank you, Captain Spanos, for a lifetime devoted to aviation and for the legacy you leave behind. We wish you health, happiness, and many rewarding adventures in the years ahead.

Today marks an important milestone for Marathon Airlines as we launch operations in Libya in partnership with Medsky airways.

Our newly introduced Embraer E195, SX-LUX, has already commenced operations, supporting connectivity both across the EMEA region and between destinations within Libya.

This development reflects another meaningful step in Marathon Airlines’ growing ACMI footprint and underlines our commitment to delivering reliable, flexible, and high-quality operational support to our partners in diverse and demanding markets.

We are pleased to support Medsky Airways in this new chapter and look forward to contributing to enhanced connectivity in the region.
