Love the Greek coastlines, but hate the summer crowds? Here’s a better way to experience Greece...

Eurostat's latest tourism map shows island hotspots absorbing up to 127+ tourism nights per resident, while incredible mainland regions right next door sit practically untouched at under 2 nights per resident.

But who says you have to choose between sun-soaked beaches and peaceful, authentic adventures?
At Joysters, we’re bridging the gap between the stunning Greek islands and the rich interior of Mainland Greece to give you the ultimate best of both worlds:

Sea-to-Mountain Itineraries:
Relax on Ionian coastlines, then head inland to explore magical mountain villages and iconic sites like Meteora.

360° Experiences:
Pair beach days with regional wine tasting, rich local gastronomy, and eco-tours at the Arcturos wildlife sanctuary.

Beyond Summer:
Discover the magic of Greece in autumn, winter, and spring!

Smarter travel isn't about doing less, it's about expanding your horizons, escaping the crowds, and supporting local communities along the way.
Ready to experience a deeper, richer side of Greece?

If your Greek summer doesn’t involve wearing a something warm at night or while sipping tsipouro under the shade of a plain tree or next to a freezing waterfall, you’re doing it wrong.

Forget roasting on a sunbed with 500 other people while a speaker blasts deep house at 35°C (95°F). We’re trading packed beach clubs for stone-paved alleys, mountains, icy plunge pools, and night air so crisp you’ll actually need to pull up the blanket.

Here is where to trade the heatwave for high-altitude perfection:

The "Bring a Jacket" Greek Summer List
Papingo (Zagori): majestic peaks, and natural rock pools (the Kolymbithres), which feel like an arctic plunge in the best way possible. Zero beach clubs allowed. :)

Metsovo: Where summer means cool mountain fog, high-altitude vineyards and legendary local smoked cheese (Metsovone).

Tsagarada & Milies (Pelion): Massive plane tree shade, peaceful afternoon village siestas, and the breathtaking turquoise waters of Mylopotamos just down the winding mountain roads.

Nymfaio (Florina): Perched at 1,350 meters altitude. Think crisp mountain air, nearby tectonic lakes, and the famous ΑΡΚΤΟΥΡΟΣ - ARCTUROS brown bear sanctuary.

Stemnitsa & Dimitsana (Arcadia): Deep canyon breezes, stone mansions and the rushing waters of the Lousios Gorge.

Tzoumerka: Dramatic limestone peaks, roaring waterfalls, and pure mountain tsipouro served with local pies.

Mount Smolikas: Alpine lakes (Drakolimni or "Dragon Lake"), pine-scented trails, and the bragging rights of conquering Greece’s second-highest peak.

The Verdict: Let everyone else sweat it out down below. Up here, summer actually feels refreshing. 🌲

Designing a family Greek Adventure: A Look Inside a Custom Greek Road Trip

There are a million ways to see Greece, and none of them are wrong. But for the true adventurers out there, sometimes the most fulfilling route is the one you drive yourself.
Joysters recently had the pleasure of designing and supporting an incredible journey for an adventurous family of six Americans. They wanted an alternative to the standard tourist track, so we mapped out an epic, self-driven van expedition that covered the absolute best of the Greek mainland and the Ionian islands.

Here is the incredible loop they successfully tackled with our support:

*Athens to Nafplio: Starting south into the Peloponnese to explore ancient history and beautiful seaside villages.

* Nafplio to Delphi: Driving to the ancient ruins of the Oracle and tasting some of the best olive oil in the world.

* Delphi to Meteora: Heading into central Greece to witness the breathtaking monasteries perched on sandstone pillars.

* Meteora to Zagorochoria: Venturing deep into the rugged north to explore stone-built villages and hike dramatic gorges.

* Zagorochoria to Lefkada: Transitioning back to the coast, driving straight onto the island via the bridge that connects the island to the mainland to do some cycling and kayaking in some of Greece’s most stunning coastal landscapes.

* Lefkada to Kefalonia: Navigating local ferry logistics to roll their van across the Ionian Sea for a dramatic island stay and a unique sailing cruise to Ithaca.

* Kefalonia back to Athens: A domestic flight back to the mainland to wrap up the loop just in time for their flight home.

Is a self-driven road trip for every traveler? Definitely not. It takes a love for the open road, a bit of flexibility, and the right mindset. But for this family, the reward was an authentic, deeply bonding journey filled with spontaneous roadside stops, hidden village tavernas, and changing landscapes. A side of Greece most people never see.

As travel planners, our favourite challenge is matching the logistics to the exact energy of the client, whether that means a lounge chair on a private beach or a steering wheel and a map.

Celebrating a graduation in Northern Greece sounds like a truly memorable and unique graduation gift even if it’s raining... :)
Choosing Northern Greece over a typical coastal destination shows a focus on connection and atmosphere. It is a place that forces you to slow down, disconnect from screens, and focus on the family dynamic. Celebrating a graduation there is less about the "activity" and more about the shared experience of being in a place that feels like a hidden treasure.
Let’s hear why Amy, Katie and Thad opted for Northern Greece.

A combo of both worlds - One Unforgettable Solo Journey in Greece

What does it look like to bridge the gap between Mexico and Greece as a solo female traveller? For Isa, it looked like 12 days of pure, unfiltered discovery.
At Joysters, we recently had the pleasure of crafting a bespoke itinerary for Isa, taking her from the largely unknown, non-googlable Northern Greece to the sun-drenched, olive-clad landscapes of the South.

The North vs. The South
Isa didn’t just stick to the postcards. She experienced the duality of the Greek soul:
The North: The deep history and vibrant street life of Thessaloniki and the stone-built wonder of the Zagori villages.
The South: The ancient echoes of the Peloponnese and the crystal-clear serenity of the hidden coastlines.

The "Safety" Factor
One of the most common questions we get from our female travellers, especially those coming from as far as Mexico/USA is: "Will I be safe?"
Isa’s experience was a resounding yes. Beyond just security, she found a sense of Philoxenia (the love of strangers) that made her feel at home. Whether navigating mountain trails or enjoying a late night dinner in a bustling city square, the feedback was consistent: she felt respected, and entirely at ease.

The Rising Trend of the "Solo Seeker"
While Joysters has largely been a hub for small groups and couples, we’ve noticed a fascinating trend as of late. Solo traveller requests have been steadily increasing, a trend that speaks to a growing desire for undiluted autonomy and deeper connection, perhaps.

Travellers aren't just looking for "trips" anymore; they are looking for personal milestones. Isa’s journey proves that with the right curation, traveling alone doesn’t mean being lonely - it means being fully present.

Are you seeing a rise in solo exploration in your circles? I'd love to hear your thoughts on why more women are choosing to navigate the world on their own terms.

An Easter Like No Other
Authentic - Traditional - Atmospheric.

While most of the world thinks of Greece as a summer destination, Scottie and Dan, Kathryn and Mack, two American couples are discovering the magic of a Northern Greek Easter in the village of Nymfaio.

There’s something transformative about being in the mountains when the spring blooms hit the beech forests.

Forget the crowds. Here, it’s all about:

The Backdrop: Mist-shrouded emerald peaks and the crisp, high-altitude air that tastes like the very first day of spring.

The Taste: Homemade pites (pies) and the legendary hospitality of the Vlach people.

The Moment: Standing outside the historic, stone-built Church of Saint Nicholas at midnight, holding a flickering beeswax candle as the "Holy Light" spreads through the crowd against the backdrop of the darkened mountain peaks.

Check out the video to hear them talk about why Nymfaio has completely redefined their idea of Greece!

We are bustling with excitement because our next wonderful group of travelers is landing very soon!

While they are in the air, we are already on site, ensuring everything is beyond perfect. We have secured the most breath-taking views where the mountains meet the water (just look at those clouds!), and found the most charming, rustic spot for their midday break.

But here’s a Joysters secret: the true magic happens behind the scenes.
While fine tuning the last details, we make sure to practice what we preach: the very best travel planning is done over a feast of exquisite local meze! We are currently savoring these incredible flavors (cured meats, fresh dips—oh my!) to make sure our guests have the absolute best culinary introductions.

New EU Entry/Exit System Rolls Out, Changing Travel for Non-EU Passengers

Τhe European Union rolls out a new border control system starting March 30, which will change how non-EU travelers enter and exit the Schengen area.
The new Entry/Exit System (EES), introduced under EU regulation, replaces passport stamping with a digital process that records travelers’ personal and biometric data each time they cross external Schengen borders.

See both pictures below for details (traditional border control points & self service machines).
