Of all the beaches on the south coast of Milos, Firiplaka is the most accessible — and that is both its strength and its weakness. There is a road to Firiplaka. There is a small car park. There are beach bars. In the middle of August, there are people. 🐳

But arrive by boat in the early morning, anchor in the bay before anyone else gets there, and Firiplaka reveals itself as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Cyclades. A long arc of fine pale sand. Orange and cream volcanic rock rising steeply on both sides. Water so shallow and calm that you can walk out thirty metres and still be knee-deep. 🪶

The difference between arriving by road and arriving by boat is not just logistical. It is the difference between a crowded beach and a private one. 🫗

Most beaches in Milos get their colour from white limestone or black volcanic rock. Gerakas is different. The pebbles here are amber, orange and deep red — the result of iron-rich volcanic mineral deposits that exist nowhere else on the island in quite this concentration. When the morning sun hits the beach directly, the colours are almost unreal. 🪶

Gerakas sits on the southern coast of Milos, tucked into a small sheltered cove between Firiplaka to the west and Kleftiko to the southwest. There is no road to it. There is no path down the cliffs. The only way in is from the sea — and that is precisely why it still looks the way it does. 🧶

There are two ways to reach Tsigrado beach in Milos. The first is to park your scooter at the top of the cliff, find the narrow gap in the rock, lower yourself down a rope and squeeze through a crevice in the cliff face while hoping the person ahead of you does not get stuck. 🥏

The second is to arrive by boat, anchor in the turquoise water, and swim to shore in about thirty seconds. 🪶

Both ways work. One of them is significantly better.
