Capital Ship Management Corp., K Shipbuilding and Lloyd's Register (LR) have launched a Joint Development Project (JDP) to develop a wind-assisted 50,000 dwt Medium Range (MR) tanker.

While wind-assisted propulsion has gained traction across bulk carrier and specialist vessel segments, its application in the MR tanker market remains largely unexplored.

The project aims to bridge that gap by assessing how Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS) can be integrated into a commercially competitive tanker design, while maintaining operational flexibility and cargo-carrying capability.

The collaboration combines Capital Ship Management's operational expertise, K Shipbuilding's tanker design and construction capability, and LR's technical assurance and regulatory knowledge to address both the engineering and compliance challenges associated with deploying WAPS on a mainstream tanker platform.

Our recently delivered M/T 'Archigos' is a 157,000 DWT Suezmax crude oil tanker, built by HD Hyundai Samho Shipyard, South Korea. One of two sister vessels delivered in 2026, it is designed for the next generation of energy-efficient shipping, featuring an optimized hull, advanced propulsion, and energy-saving devices that reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. ‘Archigos’ is also equipped with methanol-ready provisions, enabling a future transition to alternative fuels in line with global decarbonization goals.

In Greek, ‘Archigos’ (‘Αρχηγός’) means ‘Leader’ — and true to its name, M/T 'Archigos' embodies everything we stand for as a company at the forefront of modern, responsible shipping.

Classed with Lloyd's Register and fully compliant with IACS Common Structural Rules, ‘Archigos’ meets the highest structural, navigational, and environmental standards — including ballast water management compliance, an EU IHM+, and a Vapour Emission Control System (VECS).

Safety is further reinforced through the Enhanced Survey Programme (ESP), a certified Inert Gas System (IGS), and full compliance with SIRE 2.0 / VIQ 7 requirements.

‘Archigos’ is equipped with HiNAS — Hyundai's AI-based navigation assistance system — providing real-time vessel collision-risk detection and augmented-reality bridge visualization for enhanced situational awareness and voyage performance.

American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) issued approval in principle (AIP) for the integration of a nuclear reactor into a cargo vessel propulsion system developed by Capital Maritime Group, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd. (HD KSOE).

This design uses a special synthetic fluid to carry heat from the reactor core. Today’s designs typically focus on micro-scale thermal outputs of 10 to 20 megawatts. The MIT design’s near-atmospheric operating pressure can allow for thinner, lighter reactor vessels, supporting modular construction and easier transport.

This is the first AIP to be granted through the MIT Maritime Consortium, where Capital Maritime Group, ABS and HD KSOE are founding members. ABS reviewed the reactor-to-machinery interface based on class requirements.

The consortium brings together academia and industry to advance technologies with the potential to reshape the maritime sector, including alternative fuels, new nuclear technologies, data-driven operational strategies, autonomy, cybersecurity and onboard manufacturing.

“It is our responsibility as an industry to explore every potential solution, including those that challenge conventional thinking. Nuclear propulsion is one such frontier. Through our membership in the MIT Maritime Consortium alongside ABS and HD KSOE, we are committed to ensuring that any pathway to net zero is grounded in the non-negotiable highest standards of crew safety, vessel integrity, and environmental protection. This AIP is the first step in that process,” said Stergios Stergiou, Chief Sustainability Officer, Capital Clean Energy Carriers Corp.

“The MIT Maritime Consortium is a unique collaboration between academia and key industry stakeholders aiming to address critical gaps in the modernization of the commercial fleet through the development of bold technological solutions, industry standards, and policies. Our reactor design is one of the first concrete outcomes of this synergy, providing a realistic pathway towards nuclear propulsion for commercial vessels,” said Themistoklis Sapsis, Koch Professor of Marine Technology at MIT and Co-director of the Maritime Consortium.

The AIP is part of the ABS New Technology Qualification (NTQ) service that provides a structured approach to support the early adoption and implementation of innovative solutions.

On 21 May 2026, our vessel M/T ALKIVIADIS participated in a friendly boarding conducted by EUNAVFOR MED warship P431 Francesco Morosini in the Central Mediterranean as part of Operation IRINI.

During the visit, military personnel embarked the vessel for information exchange and familiarization purposes, with discussions covering vessel particulars, voyage information and onboard emergency procedures.

The operation forms part of EUNAVFOR MED Operation IRINI’s efforts to support a safe and secure maritime environment and promote cooperation and information exchange across the merchant shipping community.

We would like to thank the crew of M/T ALKIVIADIS for their professionalism and cooperation throughout the operation.

Capital Ship Management Corp. participated in the 5th IENE Energy & Shipping Seminar, “Energy Security, Energy Transition and the New Maritime Reality”, organized by the Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) at the B & E Goulandris Foundation in Athens.

Mr. Nikolas Vaporis, our Chief Technical Officer and Member of the BoD of MARTECMA, participated as a speaker in Session II, “Vessel Certification for Energy Cargoes,” discussing the evolving technical and regulatory landscape of energy transportation in shipping.

During the session, he shared insights on fuel flexibility, future-ready vessel technologies, and the broader energy transition, highlighting Capital Ship Management’s commitment to innovation and sustainability through investments in dual-fuel LNG vessels, digital fleet optimization platforms, biofuel initiatives, and next-generation decarbonization technologies.

The hardest HSQE challenge in tanker operations today isn't a single risk — it's the rate at which everything is changing at once.

That was the thread running through the panel at Tanker Operator Athens 2026, where our own Konstantinos Kyrou — Deputy DPA/CSO and HSQE Officer at Capital Ship Management — joined operators across the industry to discuss what's actually working on the ground.

A few of the points he made:
→ A new generation of seafarers is arriving alongside rapidly evolving onboard technology — competency systems have to keep pace with both, not just one.

→ Fatigue cannot always be solved by adding crew. The real work is in workload design, coordination, and the quality of shore-side support.

→ Digital tools are only as good as the decisions they enable. The goal isn't more data — it's better operational judgment.
The takeaway: today's HSQE performance is built where human expertise, disciplined processes, and the right technology meet — and stay in balance.
