Santorini is the real gem of the Aegean Sea. It is the southernmost member of the Cyclades archipelago of volcanic origins. As a result of a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago, the centre of the island exploded, forming a 400-metre-deep caldera.
The caldera is a huge hollow that forms after the volcano collapses. It is underwater today.
