Pentecost Festival at Matthias Church

Sometimes Budapest gives you a little surprise just when you think the day is already beautiful enough.

In front of Matthias Church, during the Pentecost Festival, people were dancing to traditional Hungarian folk music with the towers of the church, the old stones of Buda Castle, and the atmosphere of history all around them.

This is one of the things I love most about Budapest.

It is not only a city of monuments, panoramas and famous buildings. It is also a city where traditions still appear naturally, sometimes in the middle of a private tour, turning a simple stop into a real memory.

First Balaton Holiday of the Year

Today I had the pleasure of taking a lovely British family from Budapest to Lake Balaton for their first waterside holiday of the year.

Not a tour this time, just a smooth, comfortable one-way private transfer from Budapest to the Hungarian Sea. About 1.5 hours on the road, good conversation, relaxed atmosphere, and that nice feeling when the city slowly disappears behind us and the holiday begins.

Lake Balaton is a very special part of Hungary. It is our largest lake, often called the “Hungarian Sea”, and for many Hungarian families it means summer, childhood memories, swimming, sunsets, simple food, vineyards, little towns, and long easy days by the water.

For guests arriving from abroad, Balaton is sometimes a surprise. It is not the Mediterranean, not the Adriatic, not a huge ocean coastline it is something very Hungarian. Softer, calmer, more local. A place where the pace changes.

And that is exactly why I like it.

Budapest Then and Now

Today I had the pleasure of showing Budapest to two lovely guests from the United States on a private tour by car.

They had last visited the city in 1989, right around the time of the political transition. For them, returning to Budapest after all these years was almost like seeing a completely different city.

They remembered a grey, rather worn-down Budapest. Today, they found a city full of life, elegance, renovated buildings, grand avenues, river views and quiet dignity. It was genuinely moving to see how impressed they were by what Budapest has become in just a few decades.

This tour was not about long walks. They wanted a comfortable experience by car, with a few carefully chosen photo stops, short walks and a relaxed coffee break along the way.

We stopped around the Parliament, visited the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial, and also enjoyed Heroes’ Square places where beauty, history and memory meet in a very powerful way.

At the end of the tour, we said goodbye with one of the kindest compliments I could receive:

They told me they could not have wished for a better experience during their 50-day journey through Europe.

Budapest has changed a lot since 1989.

And sometimes, the best way to understand that change is to come back and see it with your own eyes.

Private Budapest Tour by Minivan

Today I had the pleasure of showing Budapest to a wonderful Australian family of six.

For a larger group, a comfortable private minivan is the perfect solution: everyone stays together, the pace remains relaxed, and I can focus fully on guiding, storytelling and showing the city in the most enjoyable way.

We explored some of Budapest’s most beautiful highlights with short photo stops and comfortable driving between the sights. Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church and the breathtaking panorama over the Danube made a strong impression right away. Later, the elegance of the Opera House, Andrássy Avenue and Heroes’ Square showed another face of the city grand, historic and full of character.

What impressed them deeply was not only the beauty of Budapest, but also the care and energy Hungary has put into preserving its historic buildings and reconstructing so much after the destruction of war. They loved learning about the history of the country, and they were touched by the resilience, pride and quiet strength that can still be felt in the Hungarian nation.

For a coffee break, we visited one of the most beautiful buildings in the city: Párisi Udvar. A place where even a simple coffee feels like a small journey into architecture and elegance.

For lunch, we continued to the legendary Gundel Restaurant a true Budapest classic.

For the parents, this was their very first trip to Europe.

I think it could not have started much better.

Budapest in 24 Hours

Today I had the pleasure of showing Budapest to lovely guests from Berlin.

They were in the city for only 24 hours during their Danube river cruise, so the mission was clear: make the most of their short time in Budapest. We planned a 4-hour private tour by car, with comfortable driving, local stories, and short photo stops at some of the most beautiful places in the city.

What made the day especially special was their personal connection to Budapest.

One couple had last seen the city during the former communist era, while the other couple had not been here for about 20 years. And today, seeing the beautifully renovated buildings, elegant squares, river views, bridges, and the fresh energy of modern Budapest, they were genuinely impressed.

At one point, they spoke quietly to each other in German for a short moment. Then they turned to me and said:

“Tamás, we have just decided. We are coming back.”

For me, that is one of the best compliments a guide can receive.

Budapest has changed a lot. But its charm, history and beauty are stronger than ever.

Private Budapest Tour by Minivan

Today’s Budapest tour was a little different.

This time I had six lovely guests from Australia, so instead of using my own car, I arranged a comfortable private minivan with a professional driver. That gave me the best job of the day: I could sit back with the guests and focus completely on the stories, the history, the little details and the good conversations.

It was a 5-hour private tour by car, designed to show as much of Budapest as possible in a relaxed and comfortable way.

With a minivan, we can move easily between the city’s highlights, stop at beautiful viewpoints, take photos, enjoy short walks where it makes sense, and still avoid turning the day into an exhausting race. Budapest has so many faces - royal Buda, elegant Pest, grand avenues, hidden corners, dramatic history and everyday local life - and sometimes the best way to connect them all is from a comfortable seat, with the city unfolding outside the window.

For a larger group, this is one of my favourite ways to show Budapest.

The guests can stay together, the pace remains easy, and I can guide properly without thinking about traffic, parking or navigation.

Private Budapest Tour by Car

Today I had the pleasure of showing Budapest to four lovely guests from Australia.

When we do a private tour by car, the idea is simple: see as much of Budapest as possible, without rushing and without turning the day into a marathon. We drive comfortably between the most beautiful parts of the city, and I choose short, well-placed photo stops where the view, the history and the atmosphere all come together.

Budapest is a city of grand panoramas, hidden courtyards, proud monuments and quiet little moments. Some places are best discovered slowly on foot, but many of the city’s highlights can be reached beautifully by car - from the Buda Castle area and Fisherman’s Bastion to elegant squares, historic streets and unforgettable viewpoints.

For me, a good private tour is not only about ticking off sights.

It is about comfort, timing, stories, small details, and making sure every guest feels that the city is opening up in a relaxed and personal way.

Four Australian guests, a comfortable car, a few perfect photo stops, and Budapest doing what Budapest does best: looking absolutely stunning.

Lake Balaton Day Trip

With a kind lady from Israel, we left the busy world behind for a day and headed towards the Hungarian Sea.

We started with the ferry from Szántód to Tihany, crossing Lake Balaton slowly, calmly, beautifully. In the garden of the 1,000-year-old Benedictine Abbey, we enjoyed the birdsong, the silence, and one of the most peaceful views in Hungary.

From there, we continued to Szigliget Castle - the guardian of Lake Balaton - where the panorama reminds you why this region is so special.

In Badacsony, we stopped at an excellent pastry shop, then visited one of the most beautiful wine terraces in the area, with a view that does most of the talking. To finish the day, we enjoyed a relaxed one-hour walk in Balatonfüred, along the elegant lakeside promenade.

The only thing we did not find by the lake was vegan poppy seed ice cream. But the story had a happy ending: after some proper detective work, I found a pastry shop back in Budapest where my guest could finally taste vegan poppy seed cakes.

Sometimes a day trip is not just about places.

It is about quiet moments, beautiful views, good conversations - and occasionally, the serious mission of finding the right poppy seed dessert.

Lake Balaton. Tihany. Szigliget. Badacsony. Balatonfüred.

A beautiful day in Hungary.
