Walked into this temple in Glodok not knowing what to expect and walked out completely speechless. 😭

Vihara Dharma Bhakti. Built in 1650. Older than Jakarta. Still going strong.

Inside there are twelve altars, incense coils burning for literal days, and smoke hanging in the air that makes everything feel like you accidentally stepped into another century. Then someone tells you there is a Catholic church right next door on the same ground and has been for hundreds of years and you just kind of stand there nodding slowly like okay Jakarta. Okay.
Genuinely one of the most unexpectedly moving places I have been to in this city.

Glodok will not impress you from the outside. That is kind of the whole point

You have to go in. Turn down the alley that looks too narrow. Follow the smell of incense until the city noise fades. Let someone hand you a fruit you cannot name and just eat it anyway. That is when Glodok actually starts.

And once it does you will wonder how this neighborhood spent so long being the most underrated thing in Jakarta. Drop a 🙋 if you have already discovered this. 👇

Jakarta will surprise you in ways nobody warned you about.

The motorbikes everywhere. The locals who are just genuinely warm with zero catch. The call to prayer that fills the whole city five times a day and hits you right in the chest the first time you hear it properly.

Okay real talk. Jakarta has 6 spots that will genuinely mess with your expectations of this city! 😭🌿

You are walking through the Old Town and suddenly you realize the building next to you has been standing since the 1600s. Then someone points across the street at Glodok and you spend the next two hours completely lost in one of the oldest Chinatowns in Southeast Asia wondering how this never made it to your travel blog recommendations.

Then you are standing between Jakarta Cathedral and Istiqlal Mosque. Same street. Same sky. Two completely different worlds coexisting so naturally that it hits you harder than you expected.
Monas makes you feel small in the best way. The Wayang Puppet Studio makes you feel like you accidentally stumbled into 500 years of living history. And somewhere in the middle of all of it you realize that Jakarta was never the city you thought it was.
