🪷 GALUNGAN & KUNINGAN FESTIVAL ✨️
Galungan marks the sacred time when the ancestral spirits of deceased relatives are believed to return to earth and visit their former homes.
For Balinese families, this is not simply a festival, but a moment of reunion between the living and the dead.
The final day of the celebration, 10 days after Galungan, is Kuningan. On this day, the ancestral spirits are believed to depart from the earth and return to the realm of the heavenly ancestors.
The most obvious sign of the celebrations are the penjor - bamboo poles with offerings suspended at the end which line the roads. Think of these as the Balinese equivalent of Christmas trees
Galungan is a big, happy celebration where people connect with God, eat good Balinese food and dresses up in traditional clothes to visit the temples and their families.
