Selamat Hari Raya Galungan

One of the things I love about Bali is ceremony and ritual
There's ALWAYS a ceremony for something 😊

As I leave today the Balinese Hindu are celebrating one of their biggest of the year (actually it happens twice a year) Galungan and Kuningan
10 days of celebrating dharma over adharma (good over evil)

Today it launches with Galungan
The day when it is believed that all past ancestors return to earth
They return again to heaven in 10 days, the time known as Kuningan

In this time the Balinese celebrate, honour and draw wisdom from their ancestors and it is a time of family connection and devotion.

These long stick decorations are specific for the period and called penjor...made with love and focussed intention
They line the streets of the villages all across the island
Truly a sight to be seen and a vibe to be felt...and one I will miss ❤

You WON’T like Indonesia if…

🌺 You’re a bit of a Princess/Prince and want to experience different cultures/places but hold an unspoken expectation/need that everything should be “just like home”

🌺 You need everything to always run on time/to plan

I’m sure there’s more… I just can’t think of any at the moment…perhaps I’ll update this list another time

But what made me think of it was this 👇

This morning I decided to have my brekkie by the pool and do a bit of work out here for a while…why not! Nice setting, I have a comfy table and chair to work from and there’s a nice breeze blowing out here…it’s soooooo bloody hot and humid!

Anyhow, I ordered my breakfast and told the staff that I needed more toilet paper in my room (which has not been cleaned since I arrived). Well I got my brekkie…and a roll of toilet paper delivered to the table!

Now I could be a little annoyed…put off

They could have taken it to my room…and cleaned it while they’re there!

But instead I chose the more enjoyable response…chatted with the friendly staff who delivered it…exchanged some lessons in Bahasa/English…talked about random things like cats eating eggs for the opportunity to both speak sentences in Bahasa/English…and then get on with the day

And I had a little giggle about it too 😁

So here’s my Experience Indonesia tip – Chill out! It’s not the end of the world if the toilet paper gets delivered to your brekkie table and your room isn’t cleaned!
