To mitigate the shortage of professional drivers, the new rules will allow 18-year-olds to obtain a licence to drive a truck (category C) and 21-year-olds to drive a bus (category D), provided they hold a certificate of professional competence. Otherwise, a person will have to be 21 and 24 respectively to drive these vehicles.

The International Road Transport Union (IRU) has released its latest global truck driver shortage report, highlighting a significant age gap among drivers. While the number of unfilled positions in 2024 remained similar to 2023 due to reduced transport demand, the report reveals a concerning trend: a growing disparity between the employment rates of younger and older drivers. Despite these challenges, driver salaries and job satisfaction have remained high.

Although numerous software companies offer AI-supported solutions to relieve dispatchers, it will take some time before these are used across the board in freight forwarding companies. And even then, it is questionable whether they will really be able to fully compensate for the staff shortage.

Autonomous trucks will also not be an issue in 2025, so that the truck remains ubiquitous. It is therefore still important to treat existing employees well and show them appreciation – which, by the way, should be done by society as a whole. Their work is just as systemically relevant as that of employees in the police, fire and health services.
