Uber hopes to launch ridesharing in Ireland
Uber have begun to lobby the Irish Government to change taxi regulation - with the goal of launching their UberPOP, unlicensed, ride-sharing service in Ireland. Uber met with the Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe to this end last week.

Unlicensed ride-sharing - what does it mean?

In other markets, including France, Sweden and Germany, Uber has launched an unlicensed, ride-sharing service called ‘UberPOP’. This means that anybody with a driving license and a car can complete with “taxi journeys” at discounted prices via their app.

UberPOP drivers in several European countries have been fined for 'running an illegal taxi service'. Uber have demonstrated a track record of paying these fines until they can try to gather public support to change legislation.

We believe that this specific form of ridesharing is not in the consumer interest because:

A. Quality - Ireland has some of the best taxi drivers in the world, but allowing non-professional drivers into the market will drive down service quality and tarnish the reputation of the industry.

B. Insurance - Taxis must have specific taxi insurance to cover carrying passengers. There is no guarantee that passengers will get the same level of cover from UberPOP.

C. Road Safety - Taxis, which cover many more miles than private vehicles, must undergo regular stringent checks. Again, this important safety control will not be possible if companies are allowed to operate outside of existing regulation.
