Chillai-Kalan comes from Persian, meaning “major cold.”
It refers to the harshest period of winter in Kashmir and is traditionally known as “Shishur Maas” (or Sheshur) in Kashmiri usage.
Chillai-Kalan begins on 21 December and lasts for 40 days.
It is followed by Chillai-Khurd (minor cold), which lasts 20 days.
Finally comes Chillai-Bachha (baby cold), lasting 10 days, marking the gradual easing of winter.
