What happens when global trade routes become geopolitical weapons?

From military escalations in the Black Sea to erratic situations in the Strait of Hormuz blockade, global supply chain operations are already absorbing the shock of disruption, delayed cargo movement, and volatile freight costs. These are risks the logistics industry has been managing silently for months.

Now, Singapore PM Lawrence Wong has articulated them publicly and powerfully.

His warning is significant. Allowing any nation or actor to weaponize an international waterway sets a dangerous global precedent. Other maritime chokepoints could be next. If the Strait of Hormuz can be held hostage, so can the Malacca Strait, the Suez Canal, and Bab-el-Mandeb. The silence from much of the global community on this issue is equally concerning.

Nearly 90% of global trade moves by sea and 10% by air. If sea routes can be restricted, the question of air routes cannot be ignored.

While international maritime law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), guarantees freedom of navigation on paper, enforcement during conflict remains weak and inconsistent.

This gap between principle and enforcement is now a serious concern for global trade stability. I urge policymakers, trade bodies, and shipping leaders to acknowledge this risk and work toward stronger collective safeguards before disruption becomes structural.

The real question is: How long can global trade afford to operate under such pressures and when will holding trade hostage stop being the norm?
