Wallago attu a fresh water catfish is popularly known as Vaala or Aattu Vaala in Kerala.

Vaala is a favourite among fish farmers because of its speedy growth and size. Though it is said to have a growth of more than 3 feet length, the variety we grow in ponds and farms are limited to a smaller size.

This fleshy fish is popular among all fish lovers of Southeast Asia by other names such as Indian Sareng, the Bengal Boal, the Sylheti Gual or the Malaysian and Indonesian Tapah.

Murrel fish or Snake-head fish, popularly known as Varaal / Bral in Kerala is a very tasty and nutritious fresh water fish.
One of the main significance of Varaal is its natural power to heal internal wounds. Patients who underwent surgery and women after childbirth are advised to consume this fish more because of this reason.

The slippery nature makes it difficult to hold the fish and clean its skin. Experts say that rolling the fish in sand would help to hold it properly. 😉
