Loyola plans to adopt Nungambakkam railway station
Loyola College has decided to adopt and make Nungambakkam railway station a model facility with CCTV cameras and state-of-theart amenities.
Vice-principal and secretary-cum-treasurer of the college, Rev Thomas Amirtham SJ, told TOI, “Though this was planned much before, after the murder of S Swathi it has become a priority for us to reach out. It is better late than never.“
Thomas said students and the college alumni will meet soon to discuss the issue and hold talks with railway authorities and the police to take the plan ahead. “We are mulling to install CCTV cameras, provide basic amenities and ensure cleanliness. Our students will be on call at the railway station and provide security in coordination with the police till 7pm,“ he said.
Thomas said the student community of the college, which adjoins the Nungambakkam station, was shocked at the brutal murder. “Many of our students use the station to commute to college and we feel it is our social responsibility to reach out and help to prevent further incidents like this,“ he said.
Karthikeyan Murugan, an alumni member of the college, said, “We are all saddened and shocked at the incident. We will meet soon and discuss how to make the station a safer place.We will seek help from the police and railways and make this plan a reality.“
Indian Railways already has a policy that encourages citizen groups, NGOs and educational institutions to adopt a railway station and provide facilities. In the Chennai division, many stations have benefactors. A UAEreturnee, Rajesh Kanna, has earned accolades for cleaning Urapakkam station regularly and placing flower pots. Paranur station has been adopted by Mahindra Tech City .
