Roopkund, often referred to as the “Skeleton Lake,” is a high-altitude glacial lake situated in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, nestled in the Himalayas at an elevation of about 5,029 meters (16,499 feet). The lake is renowned for the mysterious human skeletons that were discovered in and around it, first brought to public attention in the 1940s. These skeletal remains, initially thought to be from a single catastrophic event, have fascinated scientists and historians for decades.
Subsequent studies have revealed that the remains belong to several distinct groups of people who perished in different time periods, primarily around the 9th century CE and then again between the 17th and 20th centuries. Genetic analysis suggests that one group was of South Asian ancestry, likely local to the area, while another group had Mediterranean ancestry, hinting at a more complex and diverse history of the region than previously assumed.
Roopkund is also a popular trekking destination, attracting adventurers with its scenic beauty and the allure of its enigmatic past. The trek to Roopkund is challenging, involving steep climbs and unpredictable weather, but it rewards trekkers with breathtaking views of the snow-covered peaks and the haunting allure of the skeletal remains.
