We love Indian textiles and love how they are created.

Bagru in Rajasthan is well known for its fascinating hand block printed textiles.

Slide 1: Stacks of wood wait to be transformed into beautiful printing blocks in the hands of the skillful artisan

Slide 2: Fabric, treated with age old recipes, is now ready to receive dabu or mud paste patterns using the carved wooden blocks. This mud is made with a special recipe and will act as a resist when the dyeing takes place.Saw dust is sprinkled on it to help it dry and bind better.

Slide 3: The printed sheets are spread on the ground to dry in the sun. Next, the dyer has prepared an indigo vat which takes skill, patience and experience. He pushes the fabric into the dye and knows exactly how to get the colour evenly on the whole length, how long to keep it inside, how many times to repeat the process to get the desired shade of the colour.

Slide 4: The coloured fabric now gets washed several times till the mud resist is completely removed.

Slide 5: And off it goes to be dried a final time.

West Bengal in India is incredibly rich in its arts and crafts.

One of the unique crafts in the region is Sholapith.

Shola is an aquatic flowering plant (biological name is Aeschynomeme aspera) and is one of the lightest woods in the world. It has a corky texture, a paper-thin bark, and feels and looks like Styrofoam.

Due to the milky white colour of the shola, it is regarded as pure and hence used to make items to adorn Hindu idols, as well as headgear for brides and grooms for the wedding ceremony. Figurines, decorative etc are also made, some with really fine detail.

The well-known pith helmets (sola topees) worn by Europeans in the Indian subcontinent and often associated with the British Empire were made of this material. Due to its light weight, it was the perfect head gear in hot climes.

Munnar town lies in the Western Ghats mountain range of Kerala in southern India. Situated at 1500 meters elevation with lovely, cool weather, it was a favourite escape for the British in the 19th C.

This was also when they introduced tea cultivation to the region as part of an effort to compete with Chinese monopoly on tea.

This is the kind of place where we end up taking hundreds of photos and then finally realize that we really just need to take it all without the camera. (I had to resist adding many more photos in this post😄).

Munnar is a perfect destination to unwind and rejuvenate in nature.

Dung to useful art. Had to stop on this drive in an urban village near Gurgaon to take pictures of this beautiful cow pat hut. The dung patties are efficiently stacked and the whole thing turned into an artistic storeroom for them. Love how the simplest and seemingly mundane is executed with passion and care.
