ZSI-Freshwater Crabs Taxonomy of Indian Freshwater Crabs Freshwater crabs are the crustaceans belonging to the infraorder Brachyura of the order Decapoda.

Crabs are found in almost all freshwater habitats. They have many ecological and economical importance. Most of the Indian freshwater crabs show high level of endemism (unique to defined geographical location). Highland crabs are even more restricted in distribution.

Ghatiana dvirupa Pati, Bajantri & Hegde, 2024, a new species of freshwater crab recently discovered in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, India.
The species name is derived from the Sanskrit meaning β€˜having two forms’ because of the difference in colour between male and female crabs in life. The common name β€œMr. and Mrs. Ghat Crab” also alludes to the fact that male crabs of the species possess pink colouration of their body in contrast to the purplish-brown coloured females.

Ghatiana dvivarna, a new species of freshwater crab from Western Ghats

πŸ“„ A new species of the freshwater crab genus 𝘎𝘩𝘒𝘡π˜ͺ𝘒𝘯𝘒 has been identified in Karnataka, India. 𝘎𝘩𝘒𝘡π˜ͺ𝘒𝘯𝘒 π˜₯𝘷π˜ͺ𝘷𝘒𝘳𝘯𝘒 sp. nov. lives in holes in laterite rocks on the elevated mountains of the Central Western Ghats (south of Goa-Nilgiris). The new species is predominantly white in life and has smaller eyes compared to the orbits, easily distinguishing it from congeners. 𝘎𝘩𝘒𝘡π˜ͺ𝘒𝘯𝘒 π˜₯𝘷π˜ͺ𝘷𝘒𝘳𝘯𝘒 sp. nov. is most similar to 𝘎𝘩𝘒𝘡π˜ͺ𝘒𝘯𝘒 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘀𝘩𝘳𝘒 but can be distinguished primarily by the terminal segment of male first gonopod's comparatively more slender.
