Dwarkanath Tagore's Forgotten Party Palace | Belgachia Villa

DESCRIPTION

What happened inside one of 19th-century Calcutta's most extravagant garden houses?

Belgachia Villa.

Built and transformed under the extraordinary lifestyle of Dwarkanath Tagore, the estate became a setting for lavish gatherings involving European and Indian elites, food, drinks, music, dance and entertainment.

But the story eventually turned.

Dwarkanath died in England in 1846, leaving enormous debts behind. Belgachia Villa was later sold and eventually became associated with the Paikpara Raj family.

Today, the palace survives as a very different fragment of old Calcutta.

We went looking for an old address in North Calcutta connected locally with her story.

We walked inside.

Old walls.

An aging doorway.

No museum.
No grand monument.

Just a forgotten corner of Kolkata connected to a remarkable story.

Bina Das: The Forgotten Home Behind Her Story | North Calcutta

Everyone remembers Bina Das.

But who remembers the home behind her story?

Born in 1911, Bina Das became known for firing at the Bengal Governor during the Calcutta University Convocation in 1932.

While tracing her story in North Calcutta, we came across 36/1 A, Sarkar Lane — an old address locally associated with her story.

We went looking.

The place is not a grand museum or a preserved monument.

It is an old house within the living city — aging walls, a narrow passage and a doorway carrying memories of another Kolkata.

This is what we believe heritage exploration should be about:

Not just monuments.
Not just famous buildings.
But the forgotten stories hiding in ordinary streets.
